The line suggests that listeners act in the present
based on past experience. It makes a
generalization that it asks listeners to apply to a
specific case.

array, if its purpose be not to force us to
submission? Can gentlemen assign any other
possible motive for it?
Reason and emotion
While terms such as “martial array” and
“submission” are charged with emotion, the basic
argument presented in these sentences appeals
to reason.
Evaluating Persuasive Appeals
• Our petitions have been slighted; our
remonstrances have produced additional
violence and insult; our supplications have been
disregarded; and we have been spurned with
contempt from the foot of the throne! In vain,
after these things, may we indulge the fond
hope of peace and reconciliation.
Reason and emotion
Henry presents a great deal of evidence and
then draws a logical conclusion from it, but he
also uses charged words like “violence,” “insult,”
“supplication,” and “spurned”.

• There is a just God who presides over the
destinies of nations and who will raise up
friends to fight our battles for us.
Emotion
The remark appeals to listeners’ religious faith by
implying that the colonists have God on their
side, and it depicts the rebels as loyal friends of
the audience and of liberty.

• The best persuasive speeches and essays
represent the other side’s concerns, and
include counter-arguments
Consider what the opposing side would say to
“shoot down” your position
How would you ease their concern, or “shoot
down” theirs?

• Turn your paper horizontal (long-ways)
• Write your name and side (pro or con) on top of
the red line (on the left)
• Pass your paper to the representatives of the
“opposing side” and have them write their name
and the best reason why people should NOT
support your position (still on top of the red line)

each sentence. Then rewrite it as a different type of
sentence, indicating what type you have rewritten it as.
Tell how your change affects the tone of the sentence.
Do not use any of the sentence types more than twice (in
total) in your re-writes.
