MODULE ONE
HIERARCHICAL
IDENTIFICATION
Emulate the Process, not the control hardware

Step back and form a mental picture which is independent of control
hardware, software, vendor or established methods.
Create a large diagram as ongoing reference

Locate a diagram of the process in a prominent place for the duration of
project

Human interface is best served if the process is kept in mind - rather
than past practices or assumptions
Commit to hierarchical implementation early

Ensures hierarchy is process oriented

Ensures continuity between configuration and human interface

Core of context sensitive navigation

Required for Global Access

HIERARCHICAL IDENTIFIER
HIERARCHICAL IDENTIFICATION

Label hierarchies with common names
“FACILITIES”, and “EQUIPMENTS”

Use terms commonly used by operations and engineering personnel
(avoid abbreviations at this point)
such
as
“AREAS”,
Include Generic Point names


List common names of parameters (Points) being measured or
controlled (motor speed, oil temperature, etc.)
