• 1) How did the art of writing change during the Renaissance from the Middle
Ages in Western Europe?
• 2) What are the individuals that show this change during the Renaissance?
• 3) What major pieces of literature changed Western thought?
• 4) How did information begin to spread so quickly?

• I) Changes in literature
• A) Wrote in the vernacular, or native/common language.
• B) Wrote for self-expression or portray the individuality of their subjects.

• I) Petrarch
• A) One of the most famous humanists
• B) Wrote sonnets about his love for a woman named Laura

• II) Machiavelli
• A) Philosopher. Most well known for The Prince which examines human conduct
and control.
• 1) The Prince was not concerned with what was morally right, but what is most
politically effective

• III) Christian Humanists
• A) As Renaissance ideas spread northward to the rest of Europe, so did its
literature.
• B)Erasmus writes The Praise of Folly
• 1) Pokes fun at greedy merchants, scholars, lovers, and priest.
• 2) Believed that Christianity should be in your heart. That the rules, ceremonies, and
money is just a distraction.

• C) Thomas More and his Utopia
• 1) utopia mean no place in Greek; now means a perfect society that does not
exist
• 2) In Utopia, society was gotten rid of greed, corruption, and war. Money is not
needed.

• IV) The Elizabethan Age
• A) The Renaissance reaches England in the mid-1500s and becomes known as
the Elizabethan Age.
• B) William Shakespeare; Englishman; poet, playwright; 1564 – 1616
• 1) Best known for his use of vernacular of Renaissance English and understanding of
human nature

• V) The Spread of Ideas (Super, duper important!)
• A) At first was slow because writing books was extremely labor intensive. It took 5
months to produce just 1 copy of a text.
• B) 1440; Johann Gutenberg (Germany) developed a printing press that used
moveable type, screw-type press, cheaply made ink, and paper from China not
parchment. Production increased to 500 books in 5 months.
• 1) 1455: The Gutenberg bible becomes the first fully text to be printed and distributed
in this manner.
• 2) Allows knowledge to spread quickly.
• 3) Mass media began to develop in the forms of newspapers and pamphlet!
