South Yorkshire
Programme- Year 5
Supporting sport across South Yorkshire
Sportivate Programme
•
Sportivate is a £56 million Lottery funded London 2012 legacy project
•
Launched in June 2011 running until March 2017.
•
The focus of Sportivate will be on the transitioning of participants into long term
regular, sustained participation.
•
Sportivate is a ‘sport’ programme and will be heavily based on work with NGBs
•
Projects will need to demonstrate and evidence real intelligence to show there is a
need for the sport.
•
South Yorkshire has three target areas:
WOMEN & GIRLS, DISABILITY and those aged 19-25 YEARS
Sportivate Delivery
•
WHO? Semi sporty 11-25 year olds who may not seek out sporting opportunities
themselves or would not usually prioritise doing sport in their own time
•
WHAT? 6-8 week blocks of sporting activities to be delivered
•
HOW? Projects will need to ensure that enough participants are targeted and
engaged in the activities to reach a retain target
•
HOW? At the end of the project, participants must be supported into a local club of
alternative sports provision
•
HOW MUCH? There is no minimum or maximum amount of funding that can be
applied for however projects must show value for money and will be assessed on
their cost per head which is calculated (£50-£60 average, max £80 per head)
Sportivate in South Yorkshire
•
Working through a Sportivate Steering Group and Technical Panel who, amongst
other responsibilities, take all decisions on successful Sportivate projects
•
Made up of representatives from the South Yorkshire Community Sport Networks,
NGB’s, educational establishments such as colleges and universities, youth agencies
and the third sector (clubs and community groups)
•
Made up of 4 delivery quarters; April-June, July-September, October-December,
January-March.
•
The process for applying will be through open commissions. There will be no area
ring-fencing or funding devolution. 2 Open Commissions released annually.
South Yorkshire Sportivate:
Funding and Targets
•
Sportivate is currently open for projects looking to deliver in April 2015- September
2015
•
South Yorkshire has just under £90,000 for Year 5 Q1&2 (April 2015- Sept 2015)
•
Applications targeted at groups WOMEN & GIRLS, DISABILITY and those aged 1925 YEARS will be prioritised.
•
It is unlikely Sportivate will fund projects delivering solely to young people aged 11-14
years, however if there is a clear need and demand please apply.
Sportivate Funding- Projects
•
Sportivate Projects should aim to provide partnership funding to match against their
Sportivate funding award – Cash or in-kind
•
Partnership Funding includes income gained from charging participants (minimal fee)
•
Sportivate projects will receive their full funding payment if they achieve a minimum of
75% of their agreed retain target.
•
For those projects who don’t achieve their retain target, only 50% of their funding
payment will be made.
•
An up front payment of 50% is made prior to the start of delivery quarters and a
further 50% is made on receipt of monitoring data through the Sportivate Portal (if
75% threshold is achieved)
Sportivate- What makes a good
project
•
Partnership approach between deliverer, NGB and identified exit route i.e. community
sports club.
•
Identify partnership funding to support the project (cash or in-kind), including income
to be gained from charging participants.
•
Be accessible (be at a time and venue appropriate to the target group).
•
Demonstrate value for money (cost per retained participant) and be based on real
cost recovery.
•
Meet the needs of your local area and participants you intend to engage. (APS 7)
•
Is sustainable- consider up-skilling your workforce, maintaining long term provision or
linking to a larger community club/ provider.
Sportivate- What makes a good
project
Recent Sport England Youth Insight research contains a set of design principles to be
considered when delivering the right experience for all young people in sport. It is
expected that Sportivate projects will reflect these design principles so they are worth reiterating
Young people are seeking experiences which are:
a) Interactive
b) Social c) Rewarding
d) Personalised
f) Creative
e) Inspiring
Messengers are influential on young people when they are:
a) Trustworthy
b) Expert c) Like me
Fitting into what’s important to young people:
a) People and dreams
b) Interests and development c) Fun and enjoyment
Sportivate- What makes a good
project
•
Sportivate does not, for a hard-to-reach group, have to be branded as sport. If
providers and deliverers feel they need to drop the prefix
•
Sportivate should extend its reach from those young people who are positive about
sport to those who have a functional relationship with sport. It may also reach those
who are uninterested in sport
•
Young people’s digital intuition is a super power and Sportivate should be a digital
programme. Social media should be used in Sportivate and it should be ever present
(not as a fad for a few weeks). The use of Sportivate’s official Facebook page and
Twitter username should be encouraged.
