Using Real Time Data to Enhance Learner Outcomes

Presented by: Mark Sanchez San Antonio ISD

Assessing Learning Outcomes

What is assessment of Student Learning Outcomes?

• Formalized processes to collect and analyze learning outcome data that will be evaluated to derive meaning and purposeful use of the data for learning enhancement.

• Assessment is meaningless unless evaluation occurs.

Assessing Learning Outcomes

Student Learning outcomes define: A particular level of knowledge, skill and abilities that a student has attained at the end (or as a result) of his/her engagement in particular set of educational experiences.

Assessing Learning Outcomes

This, then, begs the questions: • How to make evaluation meaningful?

• What outcome data should be assessed and evaluated?

Adult Education Performance Measures • What’s are target and where is our benchmark?

  Federal/State Adult Education Performance Measures Student’s Domain of Significance (DOS)

Adult Education Assessments

• Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) • TABE Complete Language Assessment System —English

(

CLAS-E) • Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment Systems (CASAS) • Basic English Skills Test (BEST)  BEST Oral  BEST Literacy

Reflection

• Does assessment occur on a regular, purposeful basis?

• How are assessment findings used for planning and decision making?

• How are assessment findings used to improve teaching effectiveness and student learning?

• How often is student data entered into TEAMS (Texas Educating Adults Management System)?

National Reporting System (NRS)

• The National Reporting System for Adult Education (NRS) is an outcome-based reporting system for the State-administered, federally funded adult education program. Developed by the U.S. Department of Education’s Division of Adult Education and Literacy (DAEL), the NRS continues a cooperative process through which State adult education directors and DAEL manage a reporting system that demonstrates learner outcomes for adult education.

Assessing Learning Outcomes

Assessment for improvement vs. accountability • Banta”…If we undertake assessment just for the purpose of demonstrating accountability, we waste our time. We must do assessment in a way that we are getting information that faculty can actually use to improve what they’re doing.”
