2016 Will Begin An Exciting Future
For SCA:
 In December, the SCA Board decided to move
forward with a major renovation of the
Community House facility.
 Construction scheduled for the Summer of 2016.
 Renovated facility will reopen in October 2016.
 Architect (Amy Nowacki) and General Contractor
(Benchmark) have been engaged.
Why Renovate vs. Building A
Completely New Facility?
 Many have a strong attachment to the current site
and its historical building.
 The current facility is deteriorating fast and needs
to be restored & upgraded asap.
 Uncertainty of timing for completion of the Civic
& Cultural Core complex.
 A new vision for how SCA can be part of the Civic
Core while retaining its current building location.
Exterior Changes:
Preliminary Artist’s Renderings
 The historic building facing Periwinkle will be restored.
 The rest of the exterior will be redone in a similar “Old
Florida” style, including a new roof.
 Parking areas and landscaping will be redesigned.
 The result will be an updated facility with a fresh and
attractive appearance.
Interior Changes:
 A more open, flexible floor  State of the art A/V




plan to allow larger events.

for smaller meetings.
New and much larger
kitchen.

areas.

equipment.
 An updated, cohesive
interior design.

Admin & Fundraising
Total:
$1,350,000
500,000
125,000
$1,975,000
Funding Sources:
 Existing SCA Reserves.
 Monies raised from past “Dancing With The Island Stars”
for building renovation.
 Advance capital gifts from Board and other major donors.
 A public Capital Campaign to be held in early 2016.
SCA’s Support for the Civic and
Cultural Core Project:
 The SCA Board continues to support creation of a new Civic
& Cultural Core area and believe it will be a positive thing for
the Sanibel community. We see the renovation of SCA’s
facility as a part of that effort.
 Benefits of the project will be:



Much needed new facilities for BIG Arts, Center4Life and SCA.
A more functional town center.
Increased town parking capacity that can be shared by all.
 SCA has remained involved in the Civic Core planning
process, working with the City, BIG Arts & Island Seniors,
trying to help move the project forward.
Previously Proposed Layout for
Civic & Cultural Core
A New Vision For The Civic Core
Community Green:
New Vision:
 Civic Core would build a large open-air pavilion on the
community green between Periwinkle and the library.
 This pavilion and surrounding lawn area would be
managed by the Community House as the new location for
large open-air festival events currently held at SCA (e.g.
Shell Festival, Arts & Crafts Fairs, and similar events).
 Parking for these events would use the new Civic Core
shared parking lots, reducing congestion on Periwinkle.
Benefits:
 The community gains an attractive, functional focal point for the
community green and improved traffic flow.
 Outdoor events have more space and a better setting.
 SCA gains expanded capacity and increased revenue opportunities.
Next Steps for SCA:
 SCA is working with the City’s architect to develop a
revised Civic Core site layout reflecting the vision.
 Review with other stakeholders and bring to City
Council in June.
 Work with other stakeholders to finalize the Civic
Core final plan, costs, partnership agreement and
governance structure.
 Bring Civic Core agreements to the SCA Board for
review/approval.
After that:
 City to arrange financing support from County and
State jurisdictions.
 City to schedule a referendum for Sanibel voters to
approve changes in land use.
