Need More Flexibility
An Illustrative Outlook at the California Grid 2013-2020 - CAISO
The opportunity
•
Smart Meters have opened a door to new products and services for our
customers
•
•
•
ZigBee chips in the meter allow for wireless communication into
the home
In Home Displays connect directly to smart meters to provide near
real-time energy consumption
Programmable Communicating Thermostats (PCT) or plug load
control (PLC) devices respond to demand response signals, remote
control and price preferences
•
These new products and services provide an opportunity for a
strengthened utility / consumer relationship
•
Customer programs are being designed with HAN technology in mind
•
HAN enables utility and the customer to maximize the value of smart
grid investments
2011 HAN Pilots
Internet Gateway Solution with In-Home Display and PCT using SEP 1.0
720 customers: Residential & Small Business
• What worked:
–
Customers liked having the real-time consumption information
–
Participants with technology only saved 9% over 3 months
–
Participants with technology and social gaming contest saved 17% over 3
months
• What didn’t work
–
40% of Internet Gateways were off-line at any given time
–
HAN devices did not interoperate as expected
–
70% failure rate in Small Business installations
–
SEP 1.0 interpretations
2012 HAN Pilots
Reduce Your Use (RYU) In-Home Display Pilot
–
650 customers received Rainforest In Home Displays
–
kW only displayed on IHD
–
Customer eligible for the higher incentive credit
–
Customers saved 8% on RYU event days compared to 2% for customers without
technology
–
When surveyed, customers were eager for more information on what they could
do to save
2012 HAN Pilots
Reduce Your Use (RYU) Thermostat Pilot
–
Internet connected thermostats were made eligible for the RYU enabling
technology credit
–
Alarm.com and Energy Hub marketed the offering and sent DR signals
–
Customers saved 27% on RYU event days
–
Application requirements were a barrier to enrollment
(sample size less than 100)
Retail Enablement
Limited utility role where customer can purchase a devices at retail
independent of the utility
ZigBee Smart Energy Profile certified device manufacturers were invited to
submit devices for testing starting September 2012
–
39 applications submitted: 13 passed / 9 failed
–
Types of devices submitted: IHD, PCT, GW, PLC
–
Reasons for failures:
• Vulnerable to remote control commands and vulnerable to disruptive device
attacks over the air
• Device GUI could not be installed successfully in order to start testing
• Device failed to indicate lost communication with meter
• Failed to commission to new meter during meter swap test
