Getting Started with Curriculum Integration “It is this culture of collaboration that will lead to the best learning.” – Stephen Noono Prepared by: Laura Fidler, Instructional Manager, NAF Webinar Housekeeping • Participants will automatically be muted • “Raise Hand” feature should be used for technical support • Questions and comments should be typed in the “Question Box” • PowerPoint available in our Community Forum section under “curriculum” on www.naf.org website Please practice using your question box by answering the following questions: What is your favorite movie? Webinar Objectives By the end of this webinar, participants will: 1. Understand the benefits and objectives of curriculum integration 2. Learn techniques for engaging core curriculum teachers 3. Discover important alignments between class work and work-based learning experiences Which ways do you integrate curriculum? Overlapping Projects or Classroom extension activities Language Arts Overlapping Content Social Studies Common Themes/Concept Mathematics Work-Based Learning Benefits of Curriculum Integration Effectively address academic and technical standards Add value to the technical curriculum, especially for NAF’s targeted population Give “punch” to the technical curriculum and raise academic achievement Address learning needs for a diverse group of students Make the learning experience engaging through contextualization Objective of NAF Academies: College and Career Readiness for all Continuum of Curriculum Integration: Where Does Your Academy Fit? Math Arts English CTE For Lang Sci Soc Stud Single Subject Parallel (Paired) Interrelated Conceptual Individual teachers make connections within their own classroom Two teachers share some topics, without team planning Several teachers plan to coordinate topics and instruction Teacher team uses a concept to frame instruction and create curricular coherence BEGINNING INTERMEDIATE ADVANCED Engaging core curriculum teachers • Team building • Start small – Curriculum access • Introduce content of NAF courses – Scope and Sequence – Culminating Project – Curriculum Integration suggestions • Common core standards • Look for ‘natural overlaps’ NAF Curriculum Culminating projects are great way to incorporate curriculum integration How do the culminating projects for each course encourage collaboration across disciplines? Academy Theme & Course Culminating project example Academy of Finance: Financial Services “How can we, as company representatives, develop two profitable financial services products that respond to the needs of our community?” Academy of Information Technology: Principles of Information Technology “How do we best design a ‘dream’ computer system that meets a specific purpose and stays within budget?” Academy of Hospitality & Tourism: “How can we, as customer service consultants, advise a hospitality- or tourism-related business to Delivering Great Customer Service improve its customer service?” Alignments between class work and work-based learning experiences Questions to ask teachers Do you know what work-based learning activities are offered in your academy? If so, how could you possibly support this activity in your class? What aspects of the physical layout of your classroom simulate the ‘real world of work’? How can you adjust accordingly? Do you incorporate group work into any class activity? If so, is it assessed? Aside from content, what other skills are needed to succeed or are ‘indirectly taught’ in your class? How can you make it more direct? Does your academy have a 4 year sequenced workbased learning plan? Considerations per grade level • • • • • Skills and Attributes Student Learning Outcomes Work-Based Learning ‘activities’ Advisory Board Look for natural overlaps Example of Work-Based Learning Plan Align classroom integration with student learning outcomes Where We Stand In Relation to Curriculum Integration What We Have In Place What We Need to Develop • Teacher collaboration/buy-in? • Common planning time? • Curriculum content mapping with clear scopes & sequences? • Cohort scheduling? • Work-Based Learning Plan? eCollege course schedule 2012–2013 Immersion Courses All Short Modules Teaching the NAF Curriculum January 28 – May 5 Introduction to Spring 2013: January 7 – May 31 Enrollment occurs monthly Academy Leadership Spring 2013: February 4 – April 28 Evan Watkins: [email protected] Let NAF know about your events!
