LEQ:
What new technologies will I
be using in our study of
watersheds?
Key Terms:
GPS
GIS
GPS


G (global) P (positioning) S (system)
Developed by the military.
Uses a network of 24 satellites that transmit precise signals to the earth.
Signals are received on Earth by GPS receivers.
A GPS receiver must receive signals from at least 3 satellites.
Enables a GPS receiver to determine its exact location, speed/direction,
elevation, and time.
GPS has become widely used in many different applications:





Aid in navigation.
Useful tool for map making.
Land surveying
Commerce.
Scientific Uses.


G (global) P (positioning) S (system)
Uses satellite and GPS receiver technology.


The system is used to accurately determine any
position (latitude and longitude) on Earth’s surface.
GPS receivers receive signals from GPS
satellites.

The receiver must receive signals from at least 3
different satellites to accurately determine the
location on Earth’s Surface.
GIS






G (geographic) I (information) S (system).
Is powerful computer software.
Creates maps.
Maps are of the same area, but have different themes (i.e.
elevation, land cover, etc) which are called layers.
Maps are then layered to show relationships between themes.
GIS is used in many different fields:




Scientific Investigations.
Resource management.
Urban planning
Logistics.
