Guiding Questions
• How can the Florida Standards be infused into effective social
science content instruction for hands on activities?
• What are stimuli based instructional strategies and how can they
assist to: support mastery of Florida Standards, support mastery of
Next Generation Sunshine State Standards for Social Sciences, and
prepare students for success to master complex content and
succeed on assessments?
• How can teachers plan for quality social science instruction?
• What resources exist to support quality social science instruction?

Standard/Benchmark Example- Let’s use SHS as an example
SS.912.A.2.1: Review the causes and consequences of the Civil War..
(NGSSS-SS).
1. Read the standard you are addressing.
2. Turn to a neighbor: answer the following question:
If an effective teacher were addressing this standard in her/his
classroom, what language would you expect to hear from the teacher?
From the student?

What are stimuli in a Social
Sciences’ classroom?
Primary and Secondary Sources- such as:
Quotes, original documents, graphs, political cartoons,
photos, etc.
Why is it important to use these
types of information during
instruction?
For EOC preparation- MOST questions have a stimuli attached
to it in which students must analyze and extract meaning to
come up with a correct answer.
For student growth- USE of stimuli Is essential for students to
grasp complex content and solidify

Overview of Florida Standards to be addressed
during stimuli based instruction simulation:
Florida Standards (refer to FLS in agenda)
1. Read the standards you are addressing.
2. Turn to a neighbor: answer the following
questions:
If an effective teacher were addressing this
standard in her/his classroom, what language
would you expect to hear from the teacher? From
the student?
How do these Florida Standards assist the social
science student to master both the content (NGSSSSS) and skill (FLS)
What are the correlations between the NGSSS-SS
and the FLSS?

Stimulus Based Instruction
Analyzing Political Cartoon- Political cartoons are illustrations
designed to express social, political and historical messages of a set
time or event.
TASK
Person #1:
Identify symbols and metaphors. A symbol is any image
that represents another thing, like Uncle Sam representing
the United States in a political cartoon.
Person #2: Find details that contribute to the irony or humor of the
cartoon. An irony is a form of humor in which something is
conveyed in a way that mocks or teases the intended
meaning.
Both Persons: Use the background knowledge
and details from the cartoon to form a conclusion and
extract the main idea and cartoonist’s opinion of the event.

Stimulus Based Instruction
DEBRIEF QUESTIONS:
• What are stimuli based instructional
activities?
• Why are they essential for mastering
NGSSS-SS EOC assessed benchmarks?
• Why are they essential for mastering
Florida Standards?

Question Item Analysis
Best Practice: a detailed analysis of :
• What the student CLAIMS is the answer to a given question;
• What EVIDENCE the student can provide to support said claim;
and
• What REASONING the student can provide to support that the
claim and evidence are accurate.
• C-E-R: Claim, Evidence, Reasoning
• This practice is essential for correcting MISINFORMATION and
strengthening analytical skills.

MYA- Post Assessment Item Analysis
SAMPLE: Correct Answer
C-E-R: Claim, Evidence, Reasoning
I CLAIM that
HThe separate
but equal
doctrine is the
correct
answer.
The EVIDENCE
I have is that in
the box, it states
separation of
race DOES NOT
imply inferiority.
The REASON that
this evidence supports the
claim to H as the correct
answer is that in Plessy v.
Ferguson, a SC case,
determined that SEPARATE
facilities WERE Constitutional
as long as they were equal and
the state legislatures had the
right to such laws.
MYA- Post Assessment Item Analysis
SAMPLE: WRONG Answer
C-E-R: Claim, Evidence, Reasoning
Teacher/Student
response: F is incorrect
as ERA was about equal
rights for Women and
much later in history.
I CLAIM that FThe ERA
doctrine is the
correct
answer.
The EVIDENCE
I have is that in
the box, it states
separation of
race DOES NOT
imply inferiority
therefore
meaning equal.
The REASON that this evidence
supports the claim to F as the
correct answer is that in Plessy
v. Ferguson, a SC case,
determined that SEPARATE
facilities WERE Constitutional as
long as they were equal and the
state legislatures had the right
to such laws- therefore they
passed the Equal Rights
Amendment
MYA- Post Assessment Item Analysis
SAMPLE: WRONG Answer
C-E-R: Claim, Evidence, Reasoning
Teacher/Student response: G
is incorrect as individual
choice doctrine does not exist
and there is nothing in the
opinion referencing such a
doctrine.
I CLAIM that
GThe individual
choice
doctrine is the
correct
answer.
The EVIDENCE
I have is that in the
box, it states
separation of race
DOES NOT imply
inferiority therefore
meaning all
INDIVIDUALS are
equal.
The REASON that this evidence
supports the claim to G as the
correct answer is that in Plessy
v. Ferguson, a SC case,
determined that SEPARATE
facilities WERE Constitutional as
long as they were equal and
therefore affects all
INDIVIDUALS.
MYA- Post Assessment Item Analysis
SAMPLE: WRONG Answer
C-E-R: Claim, Evidence, Reasoning
Teacher/Student response: I is
incorrect as no such doctrine
exists; however “competency
of the states” is synonymous
with the concept of
sovereignty.
I CLAIM that IState’s
sovereignty
doctrine is the
correct
answer.
The EVIDENCE
I have is that in the
quote, it states
“competency of the
states” meaning
within the power or
jurisdiction of the
states to create such
laws- synonymous
with sovereignty.
The REASON that this evidence
supports the claim to I as the
correct answer is that in Plessy
v. Ferguson, a SC case,
determined that SEPARATE
facilities WERE Constitutional as
long as they were equal and
therefore affects all
INDIVIDUALS- and states have
the power to pass such laws.

Best Practice in Digital Convergence- Technology resources are utilized to stimulate
student engagement and flip classrooms where students have more control and
ownership over their learning.

Utilizing social media effectively in the classroom
Taking more of a facilitator role in classroom instruction
Utilizing the wealth of primary and secondary sources available for FREE on the Internet
Providing immediate feedback concerning student learning (e.g. MyBigCampus).
Differentiating instruction to meet the learner where he/she is in terms of content and skill acquisition
and pushing them to the next level
Preparing students for the world of work and post-secondary education
