Moving Image Resources
an introduction
and a look at the BSR
Presented by UC Berkeley
Fall 2014
Learning Objectives
• Understand the basics of moving image
resource cataloging with RDA and the PCC
BIBCO Standard Record (aka “PCC Core”)
• Know where/how to look for additional
cataloging documentation and further
information related to moving image
resources
@ UCB
2
Acronyms
• AAP = Authorized Access Point
(RDA equivalent of “heading”)
• WEMI = Work, Expression, Manifestation, Item
(FRBR Group 1 entities)
• PFC = Person, Family, Corporate Body
(FRBR Group 2 entities)
@ UCB
3
Preliminaries
what you need to think about first
@ UCB
1. Identify Mode of Issuance
• See RDA 1.1.3:
– “Mode of issuance is a categorization reflecting
whether a resource is issued in one or more parts,
the way it is updated, and its intended
termination.”
• Today we will discuss
– single unit
– multipart monograph (aka MVM)
• We will not discuss serials or integrating
resources
@ UCB
5
2. Decide upon Type of Description
• See RDA 1.5
– Comprehensive: describe the resource as a whole
• Single unit: may contain multiple works
• Multi-unit set
– Analytical: describe part of a larger resource
• Single unit: if it contains multiple works, can describe
each one on a separate bib
• Multi-unit set: can describe each unit on a separate bib
– Can be both at the same time, e.g. a single unit
containing multiple works that also is part of a series
– (Hierarchical: per PCC, don’t do it; can’t do it with MARC)
@ UCB
6
3. Choose Basis for Identification
of the Resource
• See RDA 2.1
• Also known as “basis of the description”
• What to do depends upon the previous two
determinations
• Usually straightforward; no different from
what we’ve always done
– Steps 1-4 = AACR2 1.0
@ UCB
7
4. Choose Preferred Source
of Information
• See RDA 2.2.2
• For moving image resources, the preferred
source is the title frame(s) or screen(s)
– If these are lacking in the resource, see
ordered lists at RDA 2.2.2.3
@ UCB
8
Manifestation Elements
mostly in MARC tag order
@ UCB
Transcribed Elements, Numbers
• Remember: most manifestation elements
(RDA Chapter 2) are transcribed
– Follow transcription guidelines in RDA 1.7
– See earlier RDA training (Day 3) for more
info
• Apply RDA 1.8 to the following exceptions:
– Dates in MARC 264 $c
– Series numbering (number part only)
& ISSN
@ UCB

Title Proper
MARC 245 $a $n $p • RDA 2.3.2
• PCC Core
• Transcribe from preferred source of information
• May take from outside the resource; use square
brackets if so
• If title is lacking in any source, devise a title (RDA
2.3.2.11, 2.3.2.11.3)
• Unless taking title from title frame(s)/screen(s),
make a note for source of title (will discuss later)
– Always make a note for online resources
@ UCB
12
Title Proper
MARC 245 $a $n $p • RDA 2.3.2
Examples:
245 14 $a The Wizard of Oz

AAP for the Work/Expression
MARC 1XX, 240 • RDA 6.27
• PCC Core
• What we used to call “main entry”

• Remember AAPs must be unique!
Search OCLC; if you find an identical AAP, use
