I Saw Something Funny in Orbis …

From 2012 onward, more and more cataloging
records entering Orbis will be based on a new set
of rules superseding AACR2; the new rules are
generally referred to as RDA
With new titles, you will begin to see new or
changed cataloging features
We will focus on RDA's differences from the
cataloging we have created or used in the past 40
or so years; emphasis will be on the public
interface

RDA -- What Is It?

RDA= Resource Description and Access
Developed by Anglo-American national libraries and
associations but usable beyond English-speakers
Supersedes AACR2 cataloging rules for description and
access; will affect subjects to some degree
Intended to be more friendly to computers & users, and
to be more usable internationally

Based on the IFLA Functional Requirements for Bibliographic
Records [FRBR] and the Statement of International
Cataloguing Principles

RDA -- When?

The RDA testing period began Oct. 1, 2010 (the year
of publication); the Library of Congress and selected
libraries (YUL was not one of them) contributed records
following RDA rules
Test period ended December 2010, but some libraries
have continued to contribute RDA records in OCLC
June 2011: decision by LC to implement RDA March 31,
2013
YUL Original cataloging training began in June 2012;
original cataloging for bibliographic & authority
records is primarily RDA

RDA Principles

Catalog information should help (& be more
comprehensible to) the user (but not necessarily to the
cataloger)
Focus on applying cataloging to enhance user discovery,
identification, selection, and access to the resource
 Avoid cataloger-supplied esoterica (ca., fl., et al., and so
forth)


Transcribe what you see


De-emphasize cataloging-specific conventions that change
what is on the page or label, etc.
Maintain continuity with AACR2

Transition to Future Uses

Use of RDA with MARC is transitional; RDA was created
with the understanding that MARC will require a
replacement
FRBR, the “model" behind the RDA rules, uses entity
relationships and data element sets, a simpler and more
flexible type of modeling much more suited to the web
than anything in MARC
Defining cataloging in terms of data-element sets &
entity relationships rather than MARC/ISBD opens the
door for new approaches to library knowledge
organization

YUL has now begun to perform original cataloging
under the RDA rules
RDA records have been trickling into Orbis for
some time; volume should expand as more LC
cataloging staff are trained in anticipation of
March 31, 2013; large libraries will probably adopt
RDA is intended to make life easier for users &
programmers (but it will take some time)
