OTDR Checks Launch Quality…
● At start of OTDR test, OFL280 checks connection to fiber-under-test
(if Launch Quality Check enabled)
● Alerts user when poor launch condition exists at OTDR connector
 Usually due to dirty, damaged, or mismatched (UPC  APC) connectors
 Check and clean connection before continuing OTDR test
 Launch quality checked after live fiber check (to prevent service disruption)
● Good launch condition eliminates follow-up visit to obtain useful results
 Provides user opportunity to clean and recheck, or continue test anyway
 Launch quality check enabled/disabled in Main Menu Settings tab

What’s Unique when Testing a Live PON?
● One subscriber may lose service while others remain in-service
 Network continues to transmit 1310, 1490, and possibly 1550 nm signals
● Check downstream PON power levels at out-of-service ONT:
 OK: Power at 1490 & 1550 nm wavelengths within expected levels
 Dim or Dark: Little or no 1490 and/or 1550 nm power due to upstream fault
● Cannot test a live PON using a standard OTDR!
 OTDR test at 1310, 1490, or 1550 nm will disrupt service to other customers!
 Downstream 1490 or 1550 nm signals interfere with normal OTDR’s receiver
● Test in-service PON using a Live PON OTDR which includes:
 An OTDR laser at an out-of-band wavelength (e.g. 1625 nm)
 A filtered detector to reject in-service wavelengths (e.g. 1490, 1550)

● All OFL280 models detect live traffic and prevent OTDR
testing at 1310 and 1550 nm when live traffic is present
 If live traffic not detected, testing proceeds as previously shown
 If live traffic is detected, OTDR testing @ 1310/1550 is not allowed
● The OFL280-103 supports testing of Live FTTx PONs
 Includes ServiceSafe™ live fiber detection
 Includes integrated PON Power Meter to detect and measure
downstream power levels at 1490 and 1550 nm

Each event in the table provides the following info:

Understanding Events
● Non-reflective events may be any of the following:
 Fusion splices:
– Typically < 0.2 dB; Many too good to even be seen; Similar values at all ls
 Macro-bends:
– Typically in splice closures & access cabinets, often at connector & splice locations
– Indicated by higher loss at longer l (1550, 1625 nm) vs. shorter l (1310, 1490 nm)
 Non-reflective breaks
 Clean angle-polished connectors (APC)
 PON Splitters:
– High loss events (> 3 dB) in PONs only
– Loss depends on split ratio
● Reflective events may be any of the following:

 You can also open the RESULTS folder and drag selected files to

The Importance of Backup
● Here is one way to ensure you always have a
backup copy of your OFL280 test results:
 Copy (do not Move) the Results folder to your PC
 Verify the Results folder was transferred successfully
 Put a copy of the Results folder on a backup drive
(e.g. a USB memory stick)
 At this point you can delete the Results folder from the
OFL folder in My Computer. This will erase the Results
folder on your OFL280.
 The OFL280 will regenerate a new, empty Results
folder the next time you save results.

Bluetooth File Transfers
● OFL280 includes Bluetooth Interface
 Pair to another Bluetooth device
 Send (upload) files to paired Bluetooth device
 Receive (download) files from paired Bluetooth device
● Upload OTDR, OPM results to phone, tablet without USB connection

Pair OFL280 to Another Bluetooth Device
● From Main Menu Settings tab, select Bluetooth…
● From Bluetooth Setup tab, set Bluetooth = On
● Set Visibility = Shown to All
● On other device, find Bluetooth settings and select option to add a new
Bluetooth device
 A list of available devices should be displayed including the OFL280
 Select the OFL280 device and enter a pairing code of “0000”
● On the OFL280 Bluetooth screen, select the Paired Devices tab and
verify the MAC address of the newly paired device is displayed

Send OFL280 Files to Paired Device
● Enable file reception on the paired receiving device
● In the OFL280 Bluetooth Paired Devices tab, select the MAC address of
the paired receiving device
● Press “Send” softkey on the OFL280
● File Manager is displayed on the OFL280
● To send a single file, select the file to be sent and press “Send” softkey
● To send multiple files, select each file to be sent and press “Select”
● When all desired files have been selected, press “Send” softkey
 Note: OFL280 does not currently allow a folder to be selected and sent

● Wave ID reduces test time up to 80% and eliminates setup errors
 Simultaneously measures loss at multiple wavelengths
 OPM synchronizes to wavelength sent by OLS, eliminating user setup errors

The OFL280 OLS & OPM can also …
● Send fiber-identifying tones (270, 330, 1k, 2k Hz)
● Detect fiber-identifying tones (270, 330, 1k, 2k Hz)
● Send CW (continuous wave)
 CW is useful when working with power meters from other vendors.
● Wave ID is recommended when using a Noyes power
meter (or another OFL280) to measure loss
 Wave ID cuts loss test time in half when testing 1310 & 1550,
since it tests both wavelengths simultaneously
 Wave ID eliminates setup errors, since there’s no need to
coordinate wavelength settings in Source and Power Meter located
at opposite ends of the fiber-under-test

● Navigate to select OPM Results folder
 OPM Results are labeled with “OPM” icon
 OTDR Results are labeled with “OTDR” icon

To Upload OPM Results to PC
● Upload OPM Results to PC using the same procedure to upload
OTDR Results:
 Connect OFL280 to PC using the supplied USB cable
 From the OFL280 Main Menu press USB (F2)
 From your PC:
– Open ‘My Computer’
– Open ‘OFL (E:)’ (this is your OFL280)
• (Drive letter may be different on your PC)
– Drag RESULTS folder to desktop to copy results to your PC
• You can also open the RESULTS folder to drag selected folders or files to your PC
