Ludowici is a diversified global manufacturing and engineering company
predominantly servicing customers in the mining and mineral processing industries.
Ludowici supplies a comprehensive range of materials handling, mineral processing
products and equipment, innovative design services, consumable/wear products
plus maintenance services.
We boast a worldwide reputation that’s founded on more than 150 years of
dedication to innovative design, genuine market leadership, manufacturing quality
and service excellence.
Ludowici was established in 1858 and listed on the ASX in 1911. In January, FL
Smidth announced a bid to acquire the company. The acquisition will complete by
July.
Ludowici’s annual turnover is approximately $250 million and employs 1200
people globally.

2. How do we define leadership & leadership development?
Ron Barassi once said, “There are three types of people in
this world – those that make things happen, those that watch
things happen, & those that say ‘S---, what happened?”
At Ludowici, leadership development involves the recruitment
of good people, the identification of the best people in our
business to become leaders, & the development of
appropriate development plans, which, over time enable
these people to become leaders in our business

3. What competencies/skills are we seeking to develop?
• We operate a complex global business (110,000 SKU’s, 14 factories,
global distribution), therefore people genuinely are key to our success
• We require global cultural & language diversity, with core skills in sales,
engineering, supply chain & manufacturing within each of our markets
• We operate a somewhat centralised model in terms of leadership
decisions & funding, which has become more decentralised as LDW has
globalised
• We require leaders with broad commercial acumen, strong situational
leadership (eg. participating, delegating, selling & telling styles), & well
developed emotional intelligence/tolerance for ambiguity

• We are able to maintain our best & experienced people
(average length of service exceeds 8 years)
• We operate a formal talent management program
• We locate some of our developing managers in developing
businesses around the world. We also schedule long stay visits
to improve skill levels in developing factories, & to assist us to
develop leaders in new locations

What we can do better
• We are having difficulty retaining skilled people servicing our
equipment in mining areas
• We need to be more aggressive in our efforts to increase the
capabilities of our leaders & potential leaders
• We need to be more systematic about ensuring development
plans are implemented
A recent initiative – the Ludowici Graduate
Program
• In 2012, we offered three positions in each of the key product
groups, with exposure to the rest of the business
• Each graduate has been assigned a mentor, a relatively senior
manager in the business outside the business unit in which they
are working
• Each graduate is appointed on the basis that if a substantive role
arises from or during the program, they may be appointed to that
role
Ludowici’s Future
• Our aim is to continue to grow the company significantly, through:
• Organic growth – traditional and adjacent markets
• Further expand our international operations leveraging our investment in
both current international businesses and business infrastructure
• Further targeted acquisitions
• Focusing on developing low cost manufacturing in China and India
• The acquisition of Ludowici by FL Smidth offers even greater opportunities
for the business to grow.
