THE SKILLS GAP
Best Kept Secrets & Missed Opportunities
Pssst…Technical Colleges (and Manufacturing)
are AWESOME!

destruction, the next global war will be
fought over human talent – and America is
already losing”

Image of Manufacturing:
Machine Shop of the Past
Advanced Manufacturing:
Machine Shop of the Present
Amazing Precision:
– Hard Milling $500k
– 20 millionths precision!
– Scanning CMM 5 millionths
Amazing Flexibility:
• 11 Axis (compare that to 3D)
• Multi axis spindles, lots of tooling stations, one machine
replaces many
• Very rapid set up and changeover, very accurate right
from the first part
• Can economically run jobs of 1 (complete part)
• Super Machinist (Machinist/Programmer/Mfg.
Engineer/Scheduler/Quality Professional)
A few words about Nexen:
• 90 Employees Webster
• 40 Employees Vadnais Heights
• Established in 1902
Amazing Technology:
• 80 Computer numerical-controlled machines
ranging from $80,000 to $800,000 each
• Precision machining to 20 millionths of an inch
• Inspection to 5 millionths of an inch
• Diamond-coated cutting tools
• Computers at every
workstation
Premiere Employer:
• Machinists $40K entry level
– Most at $50K +
• 70% of our jobs require technical college
education
• Already a shortage
of skilled workers
(machinists)

Things Aren’t Always As they Seem
The world is changing…
• According to former Secretary of Education
Richard Riley :
• 60 percent of all new jobs in the 21st century
will require skills possessed by only 20
percent of the current workforce.
• We are currently preparing
students for jobs that don't
yet exist using technologies
that haven't yet been
invented to solve problems
we don't even know are
problems yet.
When I graduated from High
School…
• We had:
– 8 Track Tapes – Not DVD’s, MP3’s
– Slide Rules – Not Calculators, Computers
– Rotary Phones – Not Cell Phones, PDA’s,
Blackberries
– Seat Belts – Not Air Bags, Anti-Lock Brakes,
Traction Control
– US Mail – Not E-mail, Internet Messaging,
Blogs
Achievements of the Present:
What will the future hold?
• 150-200 Year Life Spans
• Genetic Research
• Bio Engineering
– “Growing” Replacement Parts
•
•
•
•
•
•
Nano Technology – Intel Chips @ 45 microns
Hydrogen / Solar / High Efficiency Fuels
Environmental & Climatology Research
Mega Communications I-Phone
Intra Planetary / Intra Galactic Research / Travel

A Way Forward:
“Tonight, I want to speak about how we
move forward, and lay out a blueprint for an
economy that’s built to last - an economy
built on American manufacturing, American
energy, skills for American workers, and a
renewal of American values.
Now, this blueprint begins with American
manufacturing.”
President Barak Obama
State of the Union Address

Quote:
• “For 2010 and 2011 to date, GenMet has
received either job applications or resumes
from over 1,100 people. We interviewed
150, hired 25 and retained 12.”
Mary Ibister
President, GenMet
David Brooks Article:
• One of the perversities of this
recession is that as the
unemployment rate has risen, the job
vacancy rate has risen, too.
Manufacturing firms can’t find skilled
machinists. Narayana Kocherlakota of
the Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank
calculates that if we had a normal
match between the skills workers
possess and the skills employers
require, then the unemployment rate
would be 6.5 percent, not 9.6 percent.
