How to apply for an ARISS Contact ?
• United States of America

Schools and Educational Organizations within the United States and its
territories wishing to host an ARISS contact submit an application to NASA
Teaching From Space (TFS) office.
• Other Countries

Schools and Educational Organizations outside the United States can
request an ARISS contact by submitting an Application to the regional
School Contacts Manager:

Russia: Valeriy Agabekov, N2WW/ UA6HZ

Canada (Americas, except USA): Stefan Wagener, VE4NSA/VE4SW

Japan (Asia, Pacific, Australia): Keigo Komuro, JA1KAB

Europe, Africa, Middle-East: Francesco De Paolis, IK0WGF

How are Schools accepted ?
The School Selection Manager verifies :

that the application form is duly completed

that the parental authorizations and the document concerning use of
personal information are provided

that the proposal meets the educational expectations

that the application (section “B”) meets the ARISS GS requirements /
recommendations (for direct contacts only)

How are Applications handled ?



After an initial review, the manager puts the new application on the regional
waiting list: https://creator.zoho.com/school.selection.manager/ariss-europe-applications/#
 with mention “under assessment” if not all selection criteria are met:

the manager asks the applicant for missing elements

the manager assists the applicant during the selection process

as “ACCEPTED” if all criteria are satisfied
The manager informs the applicant about the EU# number and status
The manager forwards the application and all documents to the ARISS
Selection Committees and to Charlie Sufana AJ9N (ARISS Ops pages)
School contacts are scheduled following the date of the Application
Some schools/organizations are prioritized :

events requested by Space Agencies

events in the mother tongue of the astronaut

Summer Camps, etc.

How long is the waiting time for European schools ?
• The number of contacts per ARISS Region is limited to 20 - 25 per US fiscal year
• The waiting time for European schools increases steadily :

2012: (38 new applications) i.e. two years waiting time !

2013: (41 new applications) i.e. more than two years waiting time !!

2014 : …maybe three years waiting time !
No doubt, another approach is needed !

What is the goal ?
 To reduce the waiting time to no more than one year
How can we achieve this goal ?
By proposing two schools to share the ARISS radio contact
 This approach has been used successfully several times
 Additional benefits :

cooperation between schools

cooperation between local amateur radio clubs
How can we improve the quality of the educational projects ?
 With the support of the European Space Agency
 Higher criteria for educational proposals ?

Proposal for shared ARISS contacts



When the European waiting list exceeds 25 Applications, schools
accepting to share the ARISS radio contact take priority
Schools are invited to choose a partner school on the waiting list :

in principle, the language is English

another language is acceptable if an astronaut is available
Some astronauts accept Saturday contacts:

minimum impact on the planning

some astronauts accept to continue the contact during the following
pass, when the orbit permits

How to set up shared ARISS contacts ?
Telebridge shared:

both schools are linked to the ARISS telebridge station
Direct / Telebridge shared:

one school operates the radio contact and is linked to the partner
school per telephone line
Direct shared:

each school operates its radio station

alternatingly or

successively during 5 minutes each

schools are linked per telephone line

the total contact time for both schools is limited to 10 minutes

How to conduct successful shared contacts ?



Local radio amateur teams need to collaborate closely:

test runs, rehearsals...

phone patch and teleconference facilities
Schools shall share information:

questions for the astronaut

educational projects

well conducted sharing generates educational benefits
Mentors supervise and coordinate efforts

How do schools prepare for a successful contact ?

A mentor is assigned to the school as soon as it is accepted

ESA Educational Service provides classroom resources that can be used in
the frame of ARISS contacts

The school will be asked to provide information on their project

The mentor will check progress of the educational project


school presentation for the space contact

questions for the astronaut
The mentor will also keep in touch with the amateur radio team(s)
