Why NOOK Press?
NOOK Press is Barnes & Noble’s free self-publishing platform.
Authors may price their books from $ 0.99 to $ 199, and receive
royalties of 65 percent on books priced from $ 2.99 to $ 9.99,
and 40 percent for content priced at less than $ 2.98 or over
$10.00. Is NOOK Press worth the trouble? Our sales history
shows that NOOK books sells around 5% of the number of
copies sold in Kindle. That’s not a huge number but the
demographics for Nook
may work in your favor.

book as represented is only a
sample, and not your own selected
cover. To the right is a blue box,
Choose a file to upload (this file is
your cover’s jpg file). As soon as
you click on your selected cover

Click Yes. A second window will
ask if you wish to add this cover to
your manuscript. If a professional
eBook designer created your ePup

should be already embedded in the
ePub file. Select “no.”

Tips for Writing Your Novel’s Description
1. Pitch it
You have 30 seconds to explain to readers why they would enjoy
your book. That translate into 150-200 words of sales copy. For a
nonfiction work you'll want to explain the benefit of buying the
NOOK Book.
2. Add a headline
A 20-40 word headline lets readers quickly know what your book is
about. Is it a love story, a period piece, a nail-biter? It's also a good
idea to help identify the tone (humor vs. thriller), genre (romantic,
fantasy), and main events. If your book crosses genres, be sure to
note that too.
3. Leave them wanting more
Don't be afraid to leave your readers with a few questions. Once
you have them hooked with the header, your reader wants to learn
more. But what and how much will you tell? Create suspense-entice them to buy the book to find out more.
What to Include in Your About the Author
1. Tout your expertise
If you are the author of a nonfiction book, highlight your expertise.
Expertise can be everything from your training and education, to
personal experience with a topic. Your expertise is an important selling
point. Include why you wrote your NOOK Book and be sure to include
why the reader should trust your information and experience with your
topic. Make the case for why the reader needs the NOOK Book by
including sample information, key chapter titles, facts or statistics.
2. List your other titles
Let readers know about your other books so they can explore more of
your work.
3. Highlight accolades and affiliations
Include awards and memberships that demonstrate your depth of
knowledge in your field, or your experience as a writer. Also consider
mentioning organizations that will help fellow members or alumni
identify with you.

Smashwords Advantages / Disadvantages
Advantages:
•You can publish across multiple platforms through one
account.
Disadvantages (in my opinion)
•Interface lacks clear direction
•FREE ISBNs are tied to Smashwords so they are the
publisher of record, not you
•Smashwords rejects many professionally created ePub files
•Smashwords requires their name on the copyright page (thus
telling the world that you self published)
•60% through major e-book retailers; 85% through
Smashwords
•They pay through PayPal, not direct deposit into your bank
account
•Sales are reported quarterly, not monthly
