Etive Currie – GCC/PNNE/April 2012.
“It is hard to feel on top of life if you
know that where you live is looked
down upon, if you know that you are
treated less well because of where you
live, if you know people think less of
you because of where you live.”

Glasgow City Test Site……
Our test site focuses on integrating health and wellbeing into the planning system
which includes placemaking, developing healthy sustainable neighbourhoods and
placing communities more in charge of their local environments. We have been
working with partners in Public Health and have been developing work relating to
health impact assessment, working with community members using a co-production
assets approach (where by the community are equal contributors and they bring all
their assets and skills to the table). The team have developed (or are testing) some
great innovations, including:
~ Building on work started in the East End Local Development Strategy which
included a health impact assessment at a very early stage.
Etive Currie – GCC/PNNE/April 2012.
Glasgow City Test Site……
~ Innovative community consultation
work using ‘scrapbooks’ and focusing
on quality of life issues.
~ A health girl cartoon strip – which
uses art and humour to challenge the
silo’s professional groups often find
themselves in!

Glasgow City Test Site……
~ CALTON STREET AUDIT: Working with Living
Streets Scotland we carried out a street audit on
the local Community Area Associations Plan for
Change. The Street Audit involved professionals
from different departments within Glasgow City
Council (DRS, LES, etc); public health practitioners
and people who stay there.
We have now started working a series of green
space, public realm, access/movement and
lighting projects. The projects are jointly funded
by Green space/ENV 2 and Equally Well monies.
The risk here is that we are not including the
entire community and have only captured the
Calton Area Association’s view. Key task is to
become more inclusive and get more local people
involved.
Etive Currie – GCC/PNNE/April 2012.
Glasgow City Test Site……
~ Currie’s Healthy Sustainable Neighbourhood
(HSN) Model – which puts people at the heart of
the model. The main part of the model is a nine
piece jigsaw which represents spatial planning
themes.
The HSN Model addresses the
complexity of planning and the development
process, and assists in the process of quality
placemaking by informing decisions.
~ An electronic tool (HSN Placemaker) which can
be downloaded or used online to generate
discussion about placemaking and health &
wellbeing, allowing people to improve
environments and think about how this makes
them feel and initiate conversations between
local people and planning and built environment
professionals. www.hsnplacemaker.com

SALUTOGENESIS…..
Psychological Resilience –
‘Sense of Coherence’.
WORTHWHILE
THROUGH HAVING A
SENSE OF PURPOSE,
HEALTH RELATED
BEHAVIOURS BECOME
EASIER TO ADOPT.
MANAGEABLE
OPPORTUNITY THROUGH EDUCATION
ALLOWS SOCIAL NETWORKS TO BECOME
RICHER, SELF ESTEEM TO DEVELOP AND A
SENSE OF CONTROL IS FURTHER
ENHANCED. RESOURCES TO MANAGE THE
ENVIRONMENT BECOME ESTABLISHED.
COMPREHENSIBLE
BUILDING COMMUNITIES SHOULD FOCUS ON:
-- BUILDING CAPACITY.
-- POSITIVE ASSETS OF PEOPLE.
EFFECTIVE NURTURING, CONSISTENT PARENTING ALLOWS A
SENSE OF CONTROL TO DEVELOP. THE ENVIRONMENT
BECOMES STRUCTURED AND UNDERSTANDABLE.
-- POSITIVE ASSETS OF PLACE.

ACTION
Many policies FAIL in the ‘ACTION’ stage and never
make it to Implementation.
Need to focus on ‘WHAT WORKS’ and ‘HOW THINGS
WORK’.
‘ONE SIZE – DOES NOT FIT ALL’ – there are cultural
variations, socio-economic variations, etc. to
consider in terms of how things work.
Communities ARE
DEFICIENCIES.
