It is a federal semi-presidential republic, comprising 83 federal subjects. Russia shares borders with the following countries (from northwest to southeast): Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia, and North Korea. It also has maritime borders with Japan and the United States. At 17,075,400 square kilometres (6,592,800 sq mi), Russia is by far the largest country in the world. Russia is also the ninth most populous nation in the world with 142 million people. State language of Russia is Russian. Russia has the world's largest reserves of mineral and energy resources, and is considered an energy superpower. Capital of Russia - Moscow The Brown bear is a symbol of Russia 3 Moscow Moscow is the capital and the most populous city and the most populous federal subject of Russia. Moscow is a major political, economic, cultural, religious, financial, educational, and transportation center of Russia and the world, a global city. It is also the seventh largest city proper in the world, a megacity. The population of Moscow (as of 1 September 2009) is 10,535,100. Moscow is a major economic centre. It is the home to many scientific and educational institutions, as well as numerous sport facilities. A person from Moscow is called a Muscovite in English or Moskvich in Russian. The arms of Moscow and flag of Moscow represents a dark red heraldic shield and a rectangular panel with the image of the horseman St. George Pobedonosets. A hymn of city of Moscow is the piece of music-poetic created on the basis of a song of Isaak Osipovich Dunaevsky on verses by Mark Samojlovich Lisjanski and Sergey Ivanovich Agranjan « My Moscow ». 4 Flag The Russian flag is sometimes called the IMPERIAL FLAG. It consists of three equal stripes of white, blue and red. The first flag of this design appeared more than 300 years ago. Peter the Great adapted the flag from the National flag of the Netherlands. Later a black two-headed eagle on a golden background was added to the flag of Russia. The flag existed until the revolution in 1917. In the nineties, with the democratic changes, the three-colour flag was restored again. On 21 August 1991, the flag was officially adopted by the Russian President and the Russian Parliament. In Russia the colours of the current flag symbolise: 1. white- frankness and generosity; 2. Blue- honesty and wisdom; 3. Red- courage and love. 5 Emblem The Russian National Emblem is the golden DOUBLE-HEADED EAGLE with a horseman (St George) on a shield on the eagle's breast with a red background. Above the two heads of the eagle, there is a historical crown. The first emblem of the double-headed eagle was introduced in 1480, by Prince Ivan III. It was at the time of the establishment of the Russian state system. It symbolised the supreme power and sovereignty of the state. Since then, the double-headed eagle is the main part of the emblem of our country. The present kind of a wall and a tower of a fortress it have got in XVII century. Presently the Kremlin serves as a president residence of Russia, in its territory there are numerous temples and museums, the ensemble of the Moscow Kremlin is included into the list of the world heritage of UNESCO. Visiting of the Kremlin is limited by museum zones. 8 Moscow Sights The Russian well known sights are the Bolshoi theatre, the Pushkin Art Museum, The Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. GUM building, Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of Divine Mother, Resurrection Gates leading to Manezhnaya Square, the Historical museum surround Divine Cover Cathedral. At the Kremlin wall there is a memorial cemetery and the Lenin's mausoleum. Also in the territory of the Square there is a Place of execution and Minin and Pozharski monument.
