The
‘Great Invitation’
When the people heard this, they were
cut to the heart and said to Peter and the
other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we
do?”38 Peter replied, “Repent and be
baptized, every one of you, in the name of
Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your
sins…
37
… And you will receive the gift of the Holy
Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your
children and for all who are far off—for all
whom the Lord our God will call.”
(Acts 2:37-39)
“‘In the last days, God says, I will pour
out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and
daughters will prophesy, your young men
will see visions, your old men will dream
dreams…
17
(Acts 2:17)
“And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on
all people…And everyone who calls on the
name of the Lord will be saved; for on
Mt Zion and in Jerusalem there will be
deliverance.”
(Jl 2:28-32)
1st Covenant
Exodus 19:16-20:19
2nd Covenant
Acts 2:1-4
• Israel couldn’t come near
the presence of God,
• The Spirit did not enter
them,
• They were given the Law
to follow in their own
strength,
• If they touched the
mountain of God they
would die.
• All people can now come
close to the presence of
God,
• The Spirit entered them,
• They were given the
empowering presence of
God’s Holy Spirit,
• When they gathered in
Mt. Zion, they received
life.
You have not come to a physical
mountain, to a place of flaming fire,
darkness, gloom, and whirlwind, as the
Israelites did at Mount Sinai...22 No, you
have come to Mount Zion, to the city of
the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem…”
18
(Heb 12:18-24)
In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not
accompanied by action, is dead.
17
(Jm 2:17)
I will not leave you as orphans; I will
come to you.
18
(John 14:18)
When the people heard this, they were
cut to the heart and said to Peter and the
other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we
do?”38 Peter replied, “Repent and be
baptized, every one of you, in the name of
Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your
sins…
37
… And you will receive the gift of the Holy
Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your
children and for all who are far off—for all
whom the Lord our God will call.”
(Acts 2:37-39)
So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will
not gratify the desires of the flesh.
16
(Galatians 5:16)
I will give you a new heart and put a new
spirit in you; I will remove from you your
heart of stone and give you a heart of
flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you and
move you to follow my decrees and be
careful to keep my laws.
26
(Ezek 36:26-7)
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the
Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
17
(2 Cor 3:17)
“Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a
time is coming when you will worship the
Father neither on this mountain nor in
Jerusalem… the true worshipper will
worship the father in Spirit and in truth…”
(Jn 4:21-24)
