01
What is meant by ‘A Sustainable Venue’?
In taking a sustainable approach in operating our stadium we work
on managing our impacts under the 3 pillars of sustainability:
1.Economic Impact
2.Environmental Impact
3.Social Impact
This is also known as the 3 P’s – Profit, Planet, People
“Improving the quality of human life while living within the carrying capacity of
the Earth’s supporting eco-systems” - “Caring for the Earth: a Strategy for Sustainable Living”,
IUCN/UNEP/WWF (1991).
02
Why choose to operate Aviva Stadium as a
Sustainable Venue?
The redevelopment of the stadium applied some sustainable
principles that were important to the nature of the location and the
future function of the building:
• Extensive environmental impact surveying and management
• Appropriate handling of waste materials generated during demolition.
• Procuring materials from a sustainable source where possible.
• Design SOR (Statement of Requirement) that incorporated the constraints of
the unique location and the vision for the redeveloped stadium.

The road to becoming a Sustainable Venue?
It was important to the Board of Aviva Stadium as well as its Executive
Team that the sustainable ethos of the redevelopment phase of the
stadium was reflected in how Aviva stadium operates going forward.
With this in mind we:
• Engaged with our peers in the stadia community
• Reviewed several opportunities for certified and non certified processes
• Undertook some initial stakeholder engagement
• Attended some briefings and awareness sessions held by the Chair of BS8901.

What is BS8901 (ISO 20121)?
BS8901 is a management structure for
sustainable events and event venues. By
implementing a management structure we can
ensure that sustainability is embedded at the heart
of our business, as well as reflected and
integrated into the day to day way in which we
operate our business.
07
How does BS8901 work?

Learning's and Challenges to date
• Communication and understanding are vital, this needs to be
targeted and relevant and must form the first step in the
process.
• Ensuring a consistent approach with other areas of focus is
challenging but gentle reminders assist a lot.
• Targets and objectives for our first year of operations needed
to consider and reflect the fact that we also had to open the
venue.
• There is a huge interest in what we are doing and we see this
is a very positive indication that we will be challenged by our
peer going forward to the positive benefit of all.
