The Orma are semi-nomadic herders who live in the deserts of
southeastern Kenya. They are remnants of the once-powerful Galla
(or Oromo) people of Ethiopia and northeastern Kenya. Before
1500, the Oromo-speaking people began migrating south from the
northeastern highlands of Ethiopia, spreading gradually to the area
north of Mt. Kenya and down the river Tana to the coast. They raided
other settled groups as they moved through the different territories.
Late 19th century fights with their neighbors forced them to migrate
southwards into Kenya. They settled in the pasturelands north of the
Tana River due to pressure from the warlike Ogadeen Somali. Some
Orma moved into the rich delta area of the lower Tana while others

The Samburu people live slightly south of Lake Turkana
in the Rift Valley Province. They developed from one of
the later Nilotic migrations from the Sudan, as part of the
Plains Nilotic movement. The broader grouping of the
Maa-speaking people continued moving south, possibly
under the pressure of the Borana expansion into their
plains. Maa-speaking peoples have lived and fought
from Mt. Elgon to Malindi and down through Rift Valley
into Tanzania.

Though their home country is Somali, the Somali people occupy
almost the entire horn area of Africa. They are the principle
inhabitants of the Ogadeen region of southeastern Ethiopia, the
country of Djibouti and the northeastern province of Kenya. They are
believed to have originated from Saudi Arabia from the Wahabi sect.
Some folk genealogies trace certain clans to the Arabian Peninsula
and associate their ancestors with the Sharifs, the family of prophet
Mohamed. Yet, linguistic, cultural and historical evidences indicate
they came originally from the southern highlands of what is now
Ethiopia. The basis of claims to Arabic origin may lie in trading and
marriage alliances with old Arab colonies on the Somali coast.
