LIFE UNDER SLAVERY
• I) Life Under Slavery
• A) After 1830, slavery becomes a Hot topic (not the Store)
• B) Rural slavery: Men, women, and children worked from
dawn to dusk. Most slaves lived on these large plantations
• C) Urban slavery: With the Cotton Gin, the wealth of cotton
lured many white laborers from working in other fields.
• 1) Skilled workers (carpenters, blacksmiths, etc) were in high
demand
• 2) Slaves who worked in urban environments had more freedom
than those in the rural areas. But still did not have political rights.

• II) Nat Turner’s Rebellion
• A) A slave from Virginia, who stated he was chosen by God
to free his people from bondage
• B) August 1831, Nat turner leads a rebellion of 80 followers
and attacked near by plantations. 60 white people were
killed.
• C) Ultimately fails.

• III) Slave owners defend slavery
• A) After Nat Turners’ Rebellion, Southerners in the
antebellum, or Pre-Civil War South, begin to debate how to
control their slaves
• B) In V.A., some try to get rid of slavery. Fails.
• C) To help control slaves, some Southern states, instituted
slave codes, or laws to restrict slave movement

• III) Proslavery Defenses
• A) Reasons Southerners advocated for slavery :
• The Bible, citing passages that stated servants obey their
masters
• Slavery benefitted blacks by making them civilized and
Christians
• Myth of the Happy Slave was added to the mythos
• Compared slavery to horrible working conditions in factories in
the North
• Used the gag rule to stop Congress from speaking about this
issue
