THE COLLEGE ESSAY
• Is not required by all schools. (ACT/SAT writing score)
• A good essay will tell a little bit more about who you are and keep
the reader wanting to read beyond the first paragraph.
• Do you require an essay?
• If it’s optional should one be sent anyway?
• What do you look for in a college essay?
• What is the biggest mistake students make on their college
essay?
LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION
• Give your teacher plenty of notice…minimum 2 weeks.
• Provide the recommender with helpful information: A resume -including school activities, outside activities, community service, work
experience and awards.
• Follow the university guidelines.
• What makes a good letter of recommendation?
• Who should write the letter of recommendation?
• How many letters does a student need?
THE ACT & THE SAT
Register for the ACT at: www.actstudent.org , and the SAT at: www.collegeboard.org
Should a student take both the ACT and SAT? Is one preferred over the other?
Does a student have to take the writing portion of the ACT?
Will a student be penalized for taking the ACT or SAT several times?
Should students wait to see their scores before sending them to each school?
Does your school Super Score? (What does it mean to super-score?)
SAT II: Subject Tests. Check the school’s website to determine if you will need to take
a Subject II test. Subject II exams are given on the same test date as the SAT,
therefore you can not schedule the SAT I and the SAT II on the same day. Up to three
subject tests can be scheduled on one test date.

SCHOLARSHIPS
• Tell me about your scholarships? What’s the criteria?
• Is there a separate application? Are students automatically considered?
• Will the 7th semester GPA and Rank count for scholarships if the application
deadline occurs after the first semester?
