Chapter 11: Radical Expressions and
Equations
Lesson 11-1: Simplifying Radical Expressions
Goal: Simplifying radicals
involving products or quotients.
Radical Expressions

radical expression: A radical expression
is an expression that contains a radical
sign.
Properties of Square Roots


Multiplication Property of Square
Roots: For every number a  0 and b  0,
ab = a ·b.
Division Property of Square Roots: For
every number a  0 and b > 0,
Rationalizing the Denominator:

Rationalizing the Denominator: A
radicand in the denominator of a radical
expression may not be a perfect square.
Simplify by rationalizing the denominator:
multiply the numerator and the
denominator by the same radical
expression. Choose a radical expression
that will make the denominator a perfect
square.
Simplest Radical Form:

A radical expression is in simplest radical
form when all three statements are true.



The radicand has no perfect-square factors other
than 1.
The radicand has no fractions.
The denominator of a fraction has no radicals.
Assignments and a note:
