Utah’s Geography Unit I – Utah’s Geography: Regions of Utah This is a no gum class. Please dispose of it properly! Bell Activity 1) Take out your study guide, notes, and the blue paper from yesterday. 2) Your words are: “sedimentary rock” & “irrigation” Find the word on your study guide and complete the following information for the word. Find the definition using a glossary. Use your own knowledge and experience to complete the rest of the definition. Where should your backpack be? As we go through the slides take notes on each topic in its box. Beginning note takers copy what is on the screen; Advanced note takers take what they read, hear, and see and put it in their own words. Today we will be learning about… Social Studies Objective – Language Objective – We will identify and We will read to find describe three regions information and then of Utah. explain it to others. Behavior Objective – Collaboration: We will work with a group to identify characteristics of Utah’s regions. Region A region is an area that has similar language, culture, government, or even landforms. A place can belong to more than one region. There are three basic types of regions. *Formal regions are those defined by governmental or natural features(i. e., United States, Cache Valley, Brazil, The Rockies). *Functional regions are those defined by a function or service (i. e., CVTD, United Airlines Service area or a newspaper service area). If the function ceases to exists, the region no longer exists. *Vernacular regions are those loosely defined by people's perception or their ideas of what a place is like (i. e., The South, The Middle East). Utah’s (Formal) Regions Utah can be divided into many different regions or included in larger regions of the U.S. or world. Three regions based on landform are: Rocky Mountains Colorado Plateau Great Basin Each region has unique features and characteristics. We are going to read about each of these regions on pages 10-15. Some questions can be answered using your map from yesterday or the big map on the north wall. Let’s practice together! What did we learn about each region?
