my sons and the sons of Päëòu
assembled in the place of
pilgrimage at Kurukñetra, desiring
to fight, what did they do?

anärya-juñöam asvargyam
akérti-karam arjuna

The Supreme Personality of
Godhead said: My dear Arjuna,
how have these impurities come
upon you? They are not at all
befitting a man who knows the
value of life. They lead not to
higher planets but to infamy.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead
said: O sinless Arjuna, I have already
explained that there are two classes
of men who try to realize the self.
Some are inclined to understand it by
empirical, philosophical speculation,
and others by devotional service.
Gita encourages and demonstrates

aparaà bhavato janma
paraà janma vivasvataù
katham etad vijänéyäà
tvam ädau proktavän iti
(Bhagavad Gita 4.4)
Arjuna said: The sun-god
Vivasvän is senior by birth to
You. How am I to understand
that in the beginning You
instructed this science to
him?
All paths lead to the same goal – provided we know what the goal is
yat säìkhyaiù präpyate sthänaà
tad yogair api gamyate
ekaà säìkhyaà ca yogaà ca
yaù paçyati sa paçyati
(Bhagavad Gita 5.5)
One who knows that the
position reached by means of
analytical study can also be
attained by devotional service,
and who therefore sees
analytical study and devotional
service to be on the same level,
sees things as they are.
Gita illuminates our inner world
bandhur ätmätmanas tasya
yenätmaivätmanä jitaù
anätmanas tu çatrutve
vartetätmaiva çatru-vat
(Bhagavad Gita 6.6)
For him who has conquered
the mind, the mind is the
best of friends; but for one
who has failed to do so, his
mind will remain the
greatest enemy.
Clear description of the highest truth: Bhagavan
mattaù parataraà nänyat
kiïcid asti dhanaïjaya
mayi sarvam idaà protaà
sütre maëi-gaëä iva
(Bhagavad Gita 7.7)
O conqueror of wealth, there is no truth superior to Me.
Everything rests upon Me, as pearls are strung on a thread.
Outline of the highest path: bhakti
abhyäsa-yoga-yuktena
cetasä nänya-gäminä
paramaà puruñaà divyaà
yäti pärthänucintayan
(Bhagavad Gita 8.8)
He who meditates on Me as the
Supreme Personality of Godhead, his
mind constantly engaged in
remembering Me, undeviated from
the path, he, O Pärtha, is sure to
reach Me.
Krishna is engaged but detached / He is impartially parital
na ca mäà täni karmäëi
nibadhnanti dhanaïjaya
udäséna-vad äsénam
asaktaà teñu karmasu
(Bhagavad Gita 9.9)
O Dhanaïjaya, all this
work cannot bind Me. I
am ever detached from
all these material
activities, seated as
though neutral.
Krishna’s hotline help for his devotees
teñäà satata-yuktänäà
bhajatäà préti-pürvakam
dadämi buddhi-yogaà taà
yena mäm upayänti te
(Bhagavad Gita 10.10)
To those who are constantly
devoted to serving Me with
love, I give the
understanding by which they
can come to Me.
The vision of the greatness of the great Lord
divya-mälyämbara-dharaà
divya-gandhänulepanam
sarväçcarya-mayaà devam
anantaà viçvato-mukham
(Bhagavad Gita 11.10-11)
Arjuna saw in that universal form unlimited mouths, unlimited
eyes, unlimited wonderful visions. The form was decorated with
many celestial ornaments and bore many divine upraised weapons.
He wore celestial garlands and garments, and many divine scents
were smeared over His body. All was wondrous, brilliant,
unlimited, all-expanding.
çreyo hi jïänam abhyäsäj
jïänäd dhyänaà viçiñyate
dhyänät karma-phala-tyägas
tyägäc chäntir anantaram
(Bhagavad Gita 12.12)
If you cannot take to this practice, then
engage yourself in the cultivation of
knowledge. Better than knowledge,
however, is meditation, and better than
meditation is renunciation of the fruits of
action, for by such renunciation one can
attain peace of mind.
jïeyaà yat tat pravakñyämi
yaj jïätvämåtam açnute
anädi mat-paraà brahma
na sat tan näsad ucyate
(Bhagavad Gita 13.13)
I shall now explain the knowable,
knowing which you will taste the
eternal. Brahman, the spirit,
beginningless and subordinate to
Me, lies beyond the cause and
effect of this material world.
yadä sattve pravåddhe tu
pralayaà yäti deha-bhåt
tadottama-vidäà lokän
amalän pratipadyate
(Bhagavad Gita 14.14)
When one dies in the
mode of goodness, he
attains to the pure
higher planets of the
great sages.
sarvasya cähaà hådi sanniviñöo
mattaù småtir jïänam apohanaà ca
vedaiç ca sarvair aham eva vedyo
vedänta-kåd veda-vid eva cäham
(Bhagavad Gita 15.15)
I am seated in everyone's heart,
and from Me come remembrance,
knowledge and forgetfulness. By all
the Vedas, I am to be known.
Indeed, I am the compiler of
Vedänta, and I am the knower of
the Vedas.
aneka-citta-vibhräntä
moha-jäla-samävåtäù
prasaktäù käma-bhogeñu
patanti narake 'çucau
(Bhagavad Gita 16.16)
Thus perplexed by various
anxieties and bound by a
network of illusions, they
become too strongly
attached to sense
enjoyment and fall down
into hell.
çraddhayä parayä taptaà
tapas tat tri-vidhaà naraiù
aphaläkäìkñibhir yuktaiù
sättvikaà paricakñate
(Bhagavad Gita 17.17)
This threefold austerity, performed with
transcendental faith by men not expecting
material benefits but engaged only for the sake
of the Supreme, is called austerity in goodness.
jïänaà jïeyaà parijïätä
tri-vidhä karma-codanä
karaëaà karma karteti
tri-vidhaù karma-saìgrahaù
(Bhagavad Gita 18.18)
Knowledge, the object of knowledge, and the knower are the three
factors that motivate action; the senses, the work and the doer are
the three constituents of action.
