Volunteer Program
Goal:
To provide NY State forest owners with the
information and encouragement necessary to
manage their forests to improve ownership
satisfaction
Methods
Train and support a corps of certified volunteers who
work within their communities to promote forest
stewardship by:
• Conducting on-site, 1/2-day visits with
neighbor forest owners
• Collaborating with agencies and organizations
in various educational events
• Preparing articles for various media outlets

Workshops
Location:
Cornell University’s Arnot Teaching and Research Forest,
VanEtten, NY and the Hudson River Valley
Timing:
Four-day training (Wednesday evening through Sunday
noon) in mid-September (Arnot) and spring (Hudson)
Format:
Morning lectures, afternoon field trips, evening
discussion groups/guest presentations
Content:
Education skills, natural resources of NYS, tree
identification, wildlife management, forest soils,
sawtimber economics, boundary location, sawmill visit,
agroforestry, forest ecology, silviculture
Instructors:
MFO volunteers, DEC foresters/biologists, CU faculty,
private consultant foresters
