NYLON WIRE & CABLE
• Currently used in THHN, THWN
• NM constructions
• Cable tray wire
• Large diameter power cable
• Nylon adopted in early 80’s to improve performance
of existing product
• Provided safer more reliable total wire construction.
WHY NYLON IS USED
• Toughness
• Impact resistance
• Heat resistance
• Weight and size reduction of conductors
• Chemical resistance to grease, oils , hydrocarbons
• Cut-through resistance
• Abrasion resistance
CURRENT MARKET
• Consists of all Major Wire Manufacturers in NA,
SA, and Mexico.
• Total Market size is 70M lb.
• Nylene current market share 25%
• Have been selling into this market for 26 years
continuously
APPROVALS
• UL (Polymeric Materials used in W&C)
• CSA Approval (NM)
• UL 758
• UL File QMTT2.E237217
NYLENE PRODUCTS
• Nylene BX3WQ662
• Nylene BX3WQ662X
• Nylene BX3WQ662HRV
• Nylene NX4795
GENERAL PROPERTIES
• Standard extrusion viscosity 2.7
• Extractable levels range 3 – 6
• Additives for product stabilization and long
term heat ageing
• Special production dedicated only for W&C
Needs
NYLENE BX3WQ662
• Classic Grade normal production
• Ease of processabilty for circuit size & large
diameter cables
• Production speeds normally under 4000fpm
• Lower extractable levels
NYLENE BX3WQ662X
• High Speed Grade
• Used in circuit sizes where high speed
production is used (up to 8000fpm)
• Higher extractable levels.
BX3WQ662X HRV
• Higher viscosity version
• Used in both high and low speed
• Used where increased pressure needed in
extrusion equipment
NX4795
• General Purpose Grade
• Medium Viscosity
• Specialty Lub Package for improved wire pull
capability
REQUIREMENTS TO PROCESS
• Normally tandem extrusion but can use Coextrusion as well
• Wire coating approx .005 in.
• Need standard nylon screw
TANDEM WIRE COATING
• The PVC and nylon extruders are separated- each with it’s
own crosshead.
• A vacuum can utilized to adjust the jacket tightness and
remove outgasses.
• Both PVC and nylon diameters can be monitored and
controlled
CO-EXTRUSION COATING
• The PVC and nylon extruders use one common crosshead.
• A vacuum can utilized to adjust the jacket tightness and
remove outgasses.
• Only finished diameter can be monitored and controlled
• A glass smooth finish can be attained.
REVIEW
• Nylene provides 3 separate nylon grades from wire
coating
• Products are all UL approved for the applications
• Proprietary products made since 1983 for the
industry in NA and SA
• Technical support from Arnprior for all products
