CREATION OF BASIC ASSETS UNDER MAHATMA
GANDHI NREGA FOR TAKING UP OF SCHEMES
UNDER NRLM
EXAMPLE 1:
For SHG members engaged in cattle breeding,
labour under MGNREGS can be utilized for
construction of cattle shed, raising of cattle feed
etc, although there is no scope for purchase of
cattle from the fund.
EXAMPLE 2
Water body on the land owned or
taken on lease by the SHGs may be
excavated under Mahatma Gandhi
NREGS and the same could be
utilized for Pisciculture.
EXAMPLE 3
FRUIT PLANTATION ON THE LAND
OWNED OR TAKEN ON LEASE BY THE
SELF HELP GROUP MAY BE TAKEN UP
UNDER MAHATMA GANDHI NREGA
PROVIDED THE LEASE IS ON LONG –
TERM BASIS (PREFERABLY FOR 25
YEARS AND NOT LESS THAN 5
YEARS AT LEAST)
SUCCESS STORY
of
13 Shabar families of Bankura
who by cultivating mango trees
in an orchard on leased land
found hope of generating
livelihood
The land was completely barren and land
development under Mahatma Gandhi
NREGS raised hope and ultimately could
change the meaning of life for the Shabar
families united under the banner of Lipidiri
Lodda Shabar Self-help Group.
This has not only given the families hope of
self-reliance, this has empowered them to
take on the challenges of livelihood
generation in their own hands.
EXAMPLE 4
Vermi-composting uses earthworms to turn
organic wastes into very high quality compost.
In ideal conditions worms can produce at least
their own weight of organic matter in a day.
The micro-organisms in the worm casts
promote healthy plant growth.

ASPECTS OF MAHATMA GANDHI NREGA
• COULD FACILITATE REGISTRATION OF

• COULD FACILITATE MONITORING UNDER

Let us be a synergic team…
• To come together is beginning
• To work together is progress

LET US COME, WORK & FINISH

DO REMEMBER…….
Where the poor participate as subjects
and not as objects of the development
process, it is possible to generate
growth, human development and
equity
NURSERY RAISING
A Livelihood Opportunity
Nursery raising is associated
with MGNREGA from its very
onset. Here work is provided to
the women members of SHG
under sector 2 i.e drought
proofing . These schemes are
taken up by almost
all the
blocks. Nursery schemes has
given the rural women an
opportunity to change their lives
as they become financially
independent
,have
the
opportunity to work collectively
and utilize the wages received in
their need and utilize their share
of the produce .
Prerequisites :
1. Selection of species: Select the
species according to demand, future
utility.
2. Ensure that the SHG members are
job card holders and having account in
bank/post office.
3. Utilisation plan in advance: Proper
utilization of the ready saplings is
very important.
Prerequisites :
4. Awareness among the SHG members.
Awareness among the SHG members:1. SHG s should be made aware of the of the different aspect of
NREGA, starting from placing demand in 4(A), muster roll
preparation etc.
2. They should be encouraged to utilize their 25% share
productively which will give earnings in future.
For eg. : If a certain SHG has its own land , they may be encouraged to
go for block plantation with forest varieties which require very less
care, and will yield good amount of timber in future. The money earned
this way will be distributed among the members of the same SHG.
Horticultural crops
1. Horticulture on public land is permissible ,where saplings
required will be raised by SHGs.
2. SHGs having own or leased land on long term basis preferably
for 25 years and not less than 5years can grow horticultural
crops.
For eg :lemon garden
Select a garden-Go for air layering of lemon –Raise the saplingsdistributed to individuals, schools, clubs etc. –Plantation schemes for
SHGs, IBS etc.
Horticultural crops
Benefits of such a project:1. Fruit bearing ,hence will generate income.
2. As vegetative propagated saplings so fruit will come
very early.
3. Market is good
4. In the following years only maintenance is required.
5. In certain blocks it can act as live fencing which will
generate income as well as restrict the movement of
elephants.
Horticultural crops
Intercropping:
In our districts certain blocks for eg. Falakata is having
beneficiaries with areca nut garden. They may be
encouraged to go for intercropping with black pepper
plants, saplings raised SHGs under MGNREGA, which
will yield extra income for them.
Social forestry schemes:
Social forestry schemes may be taken up in all the blocks. Saplings
required may be obtained from the SHGs, prior planning should be
made for the same before head. SHGs may be engaged for these
schemes for planting as well as maintenance. According to the letter
from Commissioner, MGNREGA, vide memo no. 2755(20)comm./
NREGA, Dated:25.04.13, there is no objection if maintenance is
extended for eighteen months following 6 months of project
intervention. Moreover ,although live fencing is advocated, there is
no objection if labour intensive bamboo made gabion structures are
used for fencing as well
Multiple activities for the SHGs:
SHG s should be encouraged to go for multiple
activities, rather them occupying them only to nursery
raising like :-
1.
Vermicompost making.
2.
Azolla culture preparation.
3.
Preparation of liquid manure called amrit pani
Azolla
Azolla Culture
• Azolla is an easy to use nutritional supplement for cattle. It
has high protein content. Azolla can be mixed with
concentrates or can be given directly to livestock. It can even
be fed to poultry, sheep, goat, pigs and rabbits.
•
1.A pit size of 2m×2m×0.2m is dug .
•
2.The bottom of the pit is covered with plastic gunnies.
•
3.10-15 kgs of seived soil is spread over the plastic sheet.
•
4.Slurry made of 2kgcowdung+30gm super phosphate+10lts of water.
•
5.Add more water to as the level is increased to 10cm.
•
6.Add 500gm-to1kg fresh azolla is introduced.
•
7.500-600gms of Azolla can be harvested daily after 10-15 days.
•
8.The cost of the pit should be withinRs 2000.00
•
9.The ratio of wage : Material is 15:85
.
Bio-Manure
Sanjeevak or Amrit pani
• The low cost and effective method has immense potential to improve nutrition.
1. Take a pit 1m×1m×1m.
2. Add 50kg cowdung+20lt cattle urine+1kg jaggery+1kg chickpea+1000lts of
water.
3. Stir the mixture 3 times a day
4. After 7 days fermentation ,the liquid manure is diluted and applied on the
field.
5. It can be used in vegetable plots and kitchen gardens.
6. The unit cost of sanjeevak is pit is around rs 2000.00
7. The unskilled : Material ratio is 30:70
8. A maximum of 3 sanjeevak pits will be constructed per selected household
under MGNREGA.
