Writing with sensory details Using similes and metaphors! What is a simile? It is a comparison using the words “like” or “as.” She is as pretty as a flower What is a metaphor? It is a comparison that does not use “like” or “as,” so it is more direct. His eyes were fire when he saw his enemy. Similes and metaphors always compare nouns with other nouns. Simile or metaphor? She had a deep, throaty, genuine laugh, like that sound a dog makes just before it throws up. Her hair glistened in the rain like a nose hair after a sneeze.
