Weekly timetable (BUT, flexibility vital to an
interesting and varied curriculum)

• Thursday – English, Maths, DT, RE (Mr Davy)
• Friday – Literacy (Big Writing – extended writing
session), Maths and Topic / DT
Autumn - Curriculum
– Autumn – Inside Out
• A curriculum overview for this topic will be sent home very shortly
– Shelter building project culminating in campfire evening
– Geography – orienteering
– Science – utilising opportunities for investigating with forces
– Considering artists who utilise the natural environment

Spelling Homework
• Spellings – set Monday tested following Monday,
• Complete a sentence with 9 of the words – considering
VCOP. These sentences will be used in early work on
Thursday mornings.
• Helping your child with learning spellings:
– spelling strategies
– Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check – sheet and sentences
– Discuss your own personal strategies for overcoming spelling
barriers e.g.
• write out all possible spellings of the word – which looks
right!
• Don’t just sound out longer words, try breaking them up into
their syllables and then spell those
– Un – der – de – vel – op – ment
– Listen to the sound and consider which other words use the same
sound

Check that every one of the SPELLING WORDS is correctly spelt –
use your word lists not your memory! Tick each correct spelling.
Highlight any COOL CONNECTIVES in the middle of sentences.
Yellow Highlighter!
Highlight any really well selected WOW WORDS for description or
technical language. Blue Highlighter!
Highlight any AWESOME OPENERS – connectives, -ly, -ing, question
words, speech. Orange Highlighter!
Highlight any great PERFECT PUNCTUATION. Pink Highlighter!
Look carefully at your marking – what is your target for next
time?
HANDWRITING - 1 mark for all the same size, 1 mark for joined
handwriting, 1 mark for all slanting in the same direction.
Homework
A guide for your child’s homework in the Autumn Term:
• Monday - spellings,
• Wednesday – maths (at times will be Mathletics based)
• Thursday – planning for extended writing session (max 30mins)
• Friday – general
Regularity and quantity of homework will increase as the year progresses
• General home support - Reading, tables and day to day uses of maths –
more practical the better!
• If your child has needed support with the homework please let me know in
your child’s diary, also feel free to note anything you think they need
support with resulting from the homework.
Equipment
• Equipment needed – provided by school,
– but for interests of developing independence children can bring their own
pencil cases
• Pen (black or dark blue – not biro)
• Pencil
• Mini – ruler
• Rubber, pencil sharpener
• Maths equipment – protractor, compass, set square
PE Kit
• This term:
– Swimming kit on Tuesdays
– No other PE , however, PE kit kept at school Mon to Fri – for clubs and PE
as and when needed
• Future terms:
– Will need both indoor and outdoor kit for PE sessions - bring kit in on a
Monday take home Friday

English and maths
• Maths:
• daily lessons supported through mental maths work / tests, Mathletics
/ ICT applications
• English:
• weekly sessions based around a text type building towards
independent writing,
• greater focus on SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) – sessions
throughout the week,
• guided reading sessions – reading with a teacher / discussion of texts,
• handwriting (aim to join and use pen)
• Extended writing sessions – minimum of every two weeks through Big
Writing

• Age expectation Level 4 by the end of Year 6
• One level at expected rate of progress is two
academic years
• For any teacher assessments made levels are broken
down into sub-levels, e.g.
• Lower level 4 = 4C
• Middle level 4 = 4B
• Higher level 4 = 4A
Secondary School
• This year is preparation for this, including homework, organisation,
responsibility etc.
• Please encourage your child to take part in as many transition activities as
possible to reduce their anxieties for next September, even if this involves
activities at schools you are not applying for e.g. HDs weekend sessions
• Curriculum Days - all visit, parents attend open evenings
Humphry Davy School – Tuesday 30th September(evening 6pm)
Mounts Bay Academy – Thursday 2nd Oct (evening 6pm)
Hayle – Wednesday 1st October (year 6 transition day – you will need to
contact the school directly to organise attendance)
Helston – Wednesday 24th Sept – Open evening: 5 – 8pm

However, running alongside this consultation cycle, you will be able to access an online report
for your child at any stage throughout the year. This will outline:
Your child’s current targets – this will be updated as soon as your child’s teacher has agreed
that they have achieved each target
Your child’s attendance and punctuality
Your child’s most recent assessment data – are they on track for their end of year target and
how are they progressing towards national expectations.
Paperwork / Consent
• Reading handout - can get copies if wanted but
will be on the class web page
– Goes through useful tips on reading with your child
– As your child becomes more able reading with your child should become more like
an adult discussion about reading
• Predictions / favourite sections, characters / emotional response (Always with
a focus on why your child has that opinion – evidence)
• Planner
• Walking home permission – note in diary on the days when
they will be walking home (outlining regular collection / walk home routine)
• No mobile phones if possible!

of secondary school – develop as independent,
