Terminology

Standard
– A technical specification or other document available to the
public aimed at the promotion of optimum community
benefits.
– e.g. The British Standards and the IEC Standards
Electrical Installation II
4
Terminology

Code of Practice
– A document providing practical guidance for the design,
manufacture, setting-up, maintenance or utilization of
equipment or installations.
– e.g. the Code of Practice for the Electricity (Wiring)
Regulations



A legal document drafted by the Electrical &
Mechanical Services Department.
Sets out in statutory form the general and specific
safety requirements for consumers’ fixed electrical
installations, of either low or high voltage.

Code of Practice for the
Electricity (Wiring) Regulations



Provides technical guidelines to help the electrical
trade comply with the statutory requirements in the
Electricity (Wiring) Regulations.
Some fixed installations are exempted, e.g. MTRC,
KCRC, Government Buildings, etc.
CoP has been conferred upon ‘deemed-to-satisfy’
status.

IEE Wiring Regulations



Now part of the BS, i.e. BS 7671
An authoritative set of requirements in UK for the
design and installation of electrical system in buildings
Similar status as the CoP in Hong Kong
Electrical Installation II
8
British Standards

In Hong Kong, British Standards are among a number
of Standards recognized in the CoP as reference in the
design, construction and manufacture of equipment

Harmonization Documents &
European Standards

European Committee for Electrotechnical
Standardization (CENELEC)
– Harmonization Documents (HDs)
– European Standards (ENs)
