We'll explore the gains of pushing outside the recommended ASHRAE zone into allowable conditions. Most important, we'll look at what it means to embrace hardware failure and instead focus on resilience and recovery; the true key to ultra-low PUEs.

Biography

Thinking outside the traditional operational mindset, Chris is all about embracing radical data center designs that will make a real impact in the marketplace — whether it’s the Open Compute Project or his “hotter is better” approach to running data centers. It’s that kind of innovative, industry pushing mentality that led Vantage to appoint him COO. Chris has over 25 years of operations, engineering, and IT experience in the Internet infrastructure industry, including his former position as VP of Infrastructure Operations at Amazon Web Services. Lucky for Vantage, Chris is committed to running the best data centers on the planet, both in terms of IT and operations.

Embrace Failure!

• Hardware is a commodity. Don’t be afraid to let it die. In fact, build with failure in mind. • Stop trying to prevent hardware failure… it’s not worth the cost. Build with the knowledge that hardware will fail and instead focus on recovery. 7
