Arithmetic and Geometric
Sequences
Finding the nth Term
2,4,6,8,10,…
Arithmetic Sequence
• A set of numbers in a specific order in
which each term, after the first, is found by
adding a constant, called the common
difference, denoted by d, to the previous
term.
• Each number in a sequence is called a
term.
• The first term is symbolized by a1
• The second term by a2
• The nth term is represented by an
nth Term of an Arithmetic Sequence
Formula
an  a1  (n 1)d
where d is the common difference
Geometric Sequence
• A sequence in which each term after the
first can be found by multiplying the
preceding term by a constant called the
common ratio, denoted by r.
• The common ratio can be found by
dividing any term by the preceding term.
• The terms between any two
nonconsecutive terms of a geometric
sequence are called geometric means.
