CSF is cerebrospinal fluid
that is inside your brain and
circulates around the brain
and the spinal cord,
nourishing and protecting
them
Hydrocephalus (sometimes
called water on the brain)
occurs when too much CSF
builds up in the ventricles,
causing head enlargement
and/or increased pressure
inside the head.
This pressure doesn’t
allow the brain to
fully develop causing
a mental disability.
Hydrocephalus occurs
in about two of every
1,000 births.
Hydrocephalus can be
congenital (presented at
birth) or acquired.
Hydrocephalus can also
occur with other congenital
conditions, such as spina
bifida, that are associated
with brain and spinal-cord
problems.
Acquired hydrocephalus
develops after birth.
Causes include brain
hemorrhage,
meningitis, head
trauma, tumors and
cysts.
Premature babies are
at greater risks of
experiencing brain
hemorrhages.
