#1 HAIR HEIGHTS • Alexander’s hair grows really fast. He measured it in June and it was 1 ¾ long. Since then it has grown another ¾ inches longer. What percent of the movies does this genre have? #3 WALKING HOME • Everyday Rashaan walks to school from his house. His house is ¾ miles away. Before he goes home he walks to the store that is another ½ a mile away. His aunt lives 1/8 of a mile from the store and he goes over to say hi. How far has he walked so far? • Finally, at 5 PM his aunt sends him back home. He walks back past the store and school to get home. How far does Rashaan walk by the end of the day? #4 COLLEGE TOUR • Noah is looking at two different colleges to be a business major. University of Houston is a good school, it has 30,000 students and 15,000 wrote that they are from Texas on their application. University of California, Berkeley is another college he likes. Out of the 10,000 students 8,000 are from California. • What percent of University of Houston students are from Texas? What percent are not from Texas? • What percent of University of California students are from California? What percent are not from California? • Noah wants to go to a school with more regional diversity (people from different places), which school should he attend? #5 SOCCER CELEBRATION • Eduardo’s soccer team won a big game. After the game his coach orders pizza to celebrate. 10 players share 5 large pizzas(8 slices in a large pizza). The pizza is shared equally among the team players. • How much pizza is Eduardo given? • Eduardo is more excited about the win than he is hungry so he only eats 50% of what he is given. How many slices does Eduardo eat? #6 LIGHT LUNCHES • Justin is picked to help Cooper design a better lunch menu. He had to ask students what they liked to eat and report the results. • Here are the results from the 8th graders he talked: – – – – – – 3 students like hot dogs 7 students like french fries 12 students like pizza 8 students like cheeseburger 4 students like spaghetti 5 students like sub sandwich • The principal needs the results to be an list of each item and its fraction( of students who want it) in fraction form. They were thirsty, so she served them some fruit punch that she made earlier. The other two girls both drank 1 cup of punch. Alicia drank 1 5/8 cups of punch and Jess had 2 ¼ to quench her thirst. Sidney started off with 8 cups of punch, how much was left after everyone was full? #8 CONCERT TRAVEL • Bria traveled to Miami in August for a Chris Brown concert. Her mom arranged everything as a gift for being a great daughter. She got the airport 1 ½ hours earlier than her flight was scheduled. The flight from Houston to Miami, Florida took 2 ½ hours. She arrived in Florida at 6PM. She added eggs, flour and 5/8 cup of water and stirred. Then she added oil, sugar and another ¾ cup of water. If the total cost of the repair was $690, how many hours of work were required to repair Devon’s car? #11 T-SHIRT ORDER • FCA, a club at school ordered t-shirts from a local company. The total cost of the t-shirts was $264. There was a $120 set up fee and the shirts were $3 a piece. How many t-shirts were ordered? #12 READING RASCAL • Leanna wants to read at least 30 books this summer. So far, she has read 12 books. There are 6 weeks left in the summer. Write and solve and inequality to show how many books she must read each week. #13 AGING FAST • Jalen’s age is 6 years less than twice Kameron’s age. Jalen is 32. How old is Kameron? #14 PICTURE PROFIT • A photographer has a salary of $9 per hour in addition to $250 in picture sales commissions. If his total weekly salary was $565, how many hours did he work this week #15 CHEER COSTS • The school purchased cheerleading equipment and uniforms for a total cost of $1762. The equipment costs $598 and the uniforms were $24.25 each. How many uniforms did the school purchase? #16 JOGGING JOY • Victor runs 4 miles every day. He jogs from home to the school track, which is ¾ mile away. He then runs laps around the ¼ mile track. Victor then jogs home. How many laps does he run at the school? #17 PHONE FEES • Leah’s has a Sprint plan with these details: Phone call costs $0.58 for the first 3 minutes and $0.15 for each additional minute. If the total charge for the call was $4.78, how many minutes was her call? #18 HOCKEY FUN • Kim and Kaleigha drove to a hockey game together. The tickets cost $10.50 each and the parking was $6. Popcorn cost $2.25 a box and each of the girls bought a box of popcorn. Kim bought 1 drink and Kaleigha bought 2 drinks. The baseball game and the snacks cost the boys a total of $39.75.
