Tonight’s Meeting is focused on Intermediate and Advanced Level TRI athletes who will fly to events. But the beginners in the group can learn some valued information and look to improve their TRIATHALON future.

Things to Consider

Flying with your Bicycle

Understanding Race Wheels The Basics (Aerodynamics) Types of Tires - Tubular - Clincher Recommendations
Why buy race wheels?
1. Increased speed due to better airflow (+@1-2 mph) 2. Optimized for flat courses. Longer is better.
3. Lose their advantage on hilly terrain 4. Cost (Starts @$500 per wheel, and goes up!) 5. Will likely needs some additional accessories (<$20) (Pump adapter, valve extenders, removable core stems…)
Airflow thru the wheel openings – “egg beater” effect Flat vs Round spokes, fewer is better Rim Depth Deeper is generally better (except in crosswinds) Handling qualities, front vs back wheels All Carbon vs Carbon/Aluminum Better aerodynamics, weight and braking power

Clincher Tires
Pros
• Relatively simple and easy to change when flatting. More familiar process.
• Deeply cut or damaged tires can often be booted or patched as a last resort to complete a ride.
• Far less expensive to replace than tubular tires.
• More common and easy to find in remote locations.
• Easy to carry spare tube and tools for changing a flat
Cons
• Wheel and tire/tube combination is typically heavier than tubular systems.
• Pinch flat are possible when installing a tube and when riding due to the rim design.
• Cannot be ridden on when flat and can be dangerous if a puncture occurs at high speed.
Tubular Tires
Pros
• Typically lighter wheel and tire combination.
• Pinch flatting is much less likely due to the rim design.
• Works well with the sealant systems and can often be sealed • Can be ridden on for short periods when flat.
Cons
• More expensive than clincher tires and tubes.
• Can be more difficult to change while on the road if you are not familiar with the process.
• Unreasonable to repair, not-repairable.
• Complete spare tubular is carried as a spare, which adds weight and is bulky.
• Caution must be taken when riding a roadside repair. You need to be careful cornering until you are able to re-glue.
• Improperly glued tubulars can roll off the rim causing a crash.
• Installation is best left to a good mechanic with experience in tubulars.
Recommendations
1. Understand the cost-(50mm set will cost @$1200) 2. 50mm is a good starting point (front and back).
3. Ride a known course several times, then rent some race wheels (from SFT) and see if you notice a difference.
4. Think holistically about aerodynamics (clothing, helmet, accessories…) 5. Consider your cassette too… (@<$100)
