CHEMPACK:
PROJECT SNAPSHOT
April 19, 2007
CDC’s CHEMPACK Project
Mission
• Implement a nationwide project for the forward
placement of nerve agent antidotes to reduce
treatment time.
• Provide state and local governments with a
sustainable resource that increases their capacity
to respond quickly to a nerve agent event.
Florida’s 2007-2010
Preparedness Goals
Vision:
Florida’s health and medical system is prepared with
coordinated capabilities to prevent, protect against,
respond to, and recover from hazards and events
which impact the public’s health.
Strategies:
Chempack is one of many tools which can be
used to address several target capabilities:
Responder Safety, Medical Supplies
Management and Distribution, and Mass
Prophylaxis & SNS Annex

Standard CHEMPACK Container Types
• Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Container:
• Mostly auto-injectors (single dose)
• Some multi-dose vials for variable dosing with
elderly or pediatric patients
• Treatment capacity is 454 patients
• Hospital Container:
• Mostly multi-dose vials for variable dosing &
prolonged treatment
• Some auto-injectors if no IV access can be
established or for rapid use
• Treatment capacity is 1,000 patients
Three Storage Concepts
• Hospital setting: Chempack is stored in a hospital. If an
incident occurs, people are either transported or selftransport to that hospital where they are treated.
• EMS/Fire Rescue Setting: Chempack is stored in a
"rapid deployment" type site and can be rushed to the
incident scene to treat casualties. Chempack can also be
transported pre-event and staged in case of an
emergency.
• Hybrid Setting: Chempack is stored in one of the above
two locations, but the container contents are pre-labeled,
divided, and distributed to multiple locations via predetermined transport methods, which could include
treatment hospitals, as well as the incident scene.
Which Container is Right for Me?
Hospital vs. EMS
Facilities should choose the cache type based on several
factors:
Facility location relative to population density
Target potential (NFL stadiums, business centers, etc.)
Transportation capabilities (road access and vehicle
availability)
Jurisdictional considerations
Cache Location and Security
Requirements
•Accessibility
•Space**
•Mobility
•Temperature/Environmental Requirement
•Electrical Power
•Analog Phone Line**
•Security and Alarm Response**
•Fire Suppression**
•Sensaphone Alert Response
•24-hour Contact Personnel (designated contact)
**CDC has established minimum requirements which provide more
flexibility to sites for facilitating a Chempack cache.
Chempack: Where Florida Stands
•Florida has been
allocated 108
Chempacks.

•We have found
potential placement
facilities for
approximately 69
caches as of April
