I. Characteristics of
Living Things
(organisms)
Abiotic= Nonliving
Biotic= Living
A. Living things are Organized
1. The smallest living things are called
Cells
2. Some organisms are One cell, some
are made of many cells
3. Each cell has an orderly structure
(some have organelles)
4. Each cell contains hereditary material
(DNA). This contains the instructions for
all the cell’s functions
B. Living Things Respond
1. Organisms interact with their environment
2. They REACT to a STIMULUS
EXAMPLES:
3. Organisms do this to stay alive
4. Organisms respond to stimuli that occur
inside of them too
a) HOMEOSTASIS- the ability to keep
the same internal conditions no matter
what’s going on outside the body
C. Living things use Energy
1. All energy comes either directly
or indirectly from the sun
a) Plants use sun’s energy to
make food; animals eat plants
and other animals to get energy
2. Organisms use energy to carry
out all of their activities.
D. Living thing Grow and Develop
1. Sometimes organisms increase their
number of cells
EXAMPLE: Puppies grow bigger
2. Organisms change as they grow
(Development)
EXAMPLE: Puppies open their eyes,
their fur is less soft
3. The length of time an organism is
expected to live is its life span.
E. Living Things Reproduce
1. All living things must make
more of their own kind.
2. Some organisms reproduce
every 20 minutes, some
reproduce once every 100 years!
II. What do living things need?
A. A place to live
1. An organism’s surroundings
must provide for all its needs
EXAMPLES OF NEEDS:
B. Raw Materials
1. Water, proteins, fats, sugars
