PLOT
• A plot is the series of events in a
story.
• Think about what happened first in
the story, what happened next, and
then what happened after that.
• How did the story end?
PLOT SUMMARY
•A plot summary is a
brief retelling of the
major events in a
story.
Frindle
Nick Allen is a 5th grade student that likes to liven things up.
Mrs. Granger, his language arts teacher, tells Nick that we
decide if a word becomes a word by agreeing. Nick decides to
see if this is true. He creates the word FRINDLE to replace the
word pen. He has all of his friends use the word frindle instead
of pen. Mrs. Granger is upset and a “word war” begins. Mrs.
Granger asks Nick to sign and date a white envelope that has a
letter in it that she has written and tells him that the “word
war” will be over when he receives this letter. This conflict
causes a lot of commotion and Nick begins to change. He
begins to be withdrawn and not act like himself. Mrs. Granger
notices and tells Nick that he did not do anything wrong. She
tells him that his idea was a good idea and that she is proud of
him. This was just what Nick needed to hear and he began
being himself again. Ten years later when Nick was in college,
he received a package from Mrs. Granger. In the package
there was a new dictionary, a note, and the white envelope
that he had signed and dated when he was in fifth grade.
The note told Nick to look on page 541 of the
dictionary and when he did, he saw the word
“Frindle”. Next he opened the white envelope and
read the letter from Mrs. Granger. He realized that
she had actually been helping the word “frindle”
become a word by opposing it. Nick knew that his
idea was successful and the “word war” was now
over.

said, “gawala” instead of music. He decides to
challenge Mrs. Granger by making up the word
“Frindle” to take the place of pen.

ground with the word “frindle” without being
disrespectful to Mrs. Granger and she has him sign
an envelope.
• Nick meets Judy Morgan and she does not realize she
is talking to him when she is asking questions about
Nick.
• Nick is confronted by his parents when Mrs. Chatham
the principal comes to his home for a visit.
• The caption in the newspaper article reads: Local 5th

ask him what the meaning of this is.

at events that will occur later in the story, it is called

This is the moment in which the main
characters address the conflict. The climax
of the story is usually the most exciting part
of the story. The scene in which the
confrontation takes place would be the
climax of the story.
The Falling Action
Events that occur after
the climax are called
the falling action.
RESOLUTION
The resolution, or the solving of the
story’s problem usually explains how
the story’s conflict was resolved and
how the different characters were
affected.
Often, a resolution will explain how the
protagonist has been changed by the
events of the story.
“Frindle” - Resolution
The resolution was when Nick received a brand
new dictionary that had the word “Frindle” in
it and the white envelope that he had signed
and dated when he was in fifth grade.
• It was ten years after he
was in fifth grade when he
received it. He realized
that Mrs. Granger had
been helping the word
“frindle” all along. He
knew that now the “word
war” was over.
