Cam policy is to trace series (in 8XX) in all cases
4
Recording changes in series statement
Multipart Monographs and Serials
If a series statement is added, deleted, or changed on a
subsequent issue or part…, and this change cannot be
stated clearly in the series statement, make a note if the
change is considered to be important
Integrating Resources
If a series statement is added, deleted, or changed on a
subsequent iteration…, change the series statement to
reflect the current iteration. Make a note if the change is
considered to be important

Title proper of series and … of subseries
CORE ELEMENT
RDA 2.12.2 & 2.12.10
Transcribe the title proper of series or subseries as they
appear on the resource, following the basic instructions on
transcribing titles in RDA 2.3.1.
Sources: In descending order of preference:

c) one of the other sources of information specified under
2.2.4
6
Recording title proper of series
LC-PCC PS 2.12.2.3: Generally give each series statement
in a 490 field rather than in a note, if some issues or parts of
a serial or a multipart monograph or iterations of an
integrating resource are in different series

Numbering of serials – first +/ last parts
CORE ELEMENT
Numeric and/or alphabetic designation of first / last issue or
part of sequence – RDA 2.6.2 / 2.6.4
Chronological designation of first / last issue or part of
sequence – RDA 2.6.3 / 2.6.5
Sources (in descending order of preference):
a) the source on the appropriate issue or part of that
sequence that bears the title proper
b) another source within the resource
c) another source of information specified under 2.2.4
MARC 362
14
Numbering of serials – Transcription (1)
RDA 2.6.1.4
Record numbers expressed as numerals or as words
applying the general guidelines given under 1.8
In summary: Transcribe exactly as on source, except
substitute numerals for numbers expressed as words
LC-PCC PS 1.8.2 tells us to transcribe Roman numerals as
such, rather than converting them into Arabic numerals
Substitute a slash for a hyphen, as necessary, for clarity
If the numbering consists of a year and a number that is a
division of the year, record the year before the number
15
Numbering of serials – Transcription (2)
Transcribe other words, characters, or groups of words
and/or characters as they appear on the source of
information. Apply the general guidelines on transcription
given under 1.7 (which points you additionally to A.6)
Capitalise first word of numeric and/or alphabetic designation
of the first issue / part of a sequence of numbering
If that element is lacking, capitalise first word of the
chronological designation of the first issue / part of sequence

Mode of issuance
CORE ELEMENT
RDA 2.13
“A categorization reflecting whether a resource is issued in
one or more parts, the way it is updated, and its intended
termination”
MARC Leader: Bibliographic Level
• “m” for both “single unit” and “multipart monograph”
• “s” for “serial”
• “i” for “integrating resource”
17
Mode of issuance in Voyager
18
Frequency
CORE ELEMENT
RDA 2.14
“intervals at which the issues or parts of a serial or the
updates to an integrating resource are issued”
Make a note (RDA 2.20.12.3):
• If appropriate term not in list in RDA 2.14.1.3 or the
frequency is irregular
• For former frequency
• On a change in frequency
MARC 310/321 for current/former frequency
19
Identifier for the Manifestation
CORE ELEMENT
RDA 2.15
Scope = “a character string associated with a manifestation
that serves to differentiate that manifestation from other
manifestations”
Essentially, ISBN or ISSN (in majority of cases)
If more than one, prefer an internationally recognised
identifier
20
Recording Identifier for the Manifestation
Record in accordance with any prescribed display format
(e.g., ISBN, ISSN, URN) [but...]
If known to be incorrectly represented in the resource, record
the number as it appears and indicate that the number is
incorrect, cancelled, or invalid, as appropriate (e.g. MARC
020 $z)
If the resource bears more than one identifier of the same
type, add a brief qualification
LC-PCC PS 2.15.1.7: If ISBN represents a different
manifestation from the resource being catalogued and would
require a separate record, record the ISBN in $z
21
Examples: Identifier for the Manifestation
020 ## $a 9789070002343
022 ## $a 0046-225X
024 2# $a M011234564
020 ## $a 0387082662 (U.S.)
020 ## $z 9783527666829 (online)

Examples: Identifier for the Manifestation
020 ## $a 9780755322817 (paperback)
020 ## $a 9780755322824 (pbk.)
23
Note on Manifestation or Item
In RDA, notes relate to elements
RDA 2.20 covers notes related to identification of
manifestation or item
24
Note on Title
RDA 2.20.2
Make a note if the source of the title proper is other than the
title page
500 ## $a Title from container.
500 ## $a Title from cover.
This note may also be used to record details of variant titles
500 ## $a Some issues bear the cover title
“Engineering news update”.

Note on Issue, Part, or Iteration Used as the
Basis for Identification of the Resource
CORE ELEMENT
RDA 2.20.13
• Multipart monographs and serials: if not based on first
issue or part and/or if more than one issue or part has
been consulted
• Integrating resources: latest iteration consulted
• Any online resource: date resource viewed

Goodbye GMD
(General Material Designation)
Three new MARC fields - developed with ONIX publishing
community:
• Content type -- RDA 6.9 -- MARC 336 field
• Media type -- RDA 3.2 -- MARC 337 field
• Carrier type -- RDA 3.3 -- MARC 338 field
31
MARC for Content, Media & Carrier
In each of the three fields for these elements (336-338):
• $a: term
• $b: code
• $2: rdacontent or rdamedia or rdacarrier as
appropriate
• $3: materials specified - give if appropriate
32
Controlled Vocabularies for
Content, Media & Carrier Types
Closed lists in RDA 6.9.1.3, 3.2.1.3 & 3.3.1.3
If the information is unknown, record “unspecified”
If no term is appropriate, record “other” and notify the
Cataloguing helpdesk: [email protected]
If more than one term appropriate, two choices:
• Either give all: repeat field
• Or pick term representing the predominant or most
substantial content, media, carrier
33
Content Type – MARC 336
CORE ELEMENT
RDA 6.9, terms from Table 6.1
“Fundamental form of communication in which the content
is expressed and the human sense through which it is
intended to be perceived”
Instead of recording all, may record the content type that
applies to the predominant part or most substantial parts of
the resource
Examples: performed music
still image
text
34
Media Type – MARC 337
CAM CORE ELEMENT
RDA 3.2, terms from Table 3.1
“A categorization reflecting the general type of
intermediation device required to view, play, run, etc., the
content of a resource”
Instead of recording all, may record the media type that
applies to the predominant part or most substantial parts of
the resource
Examples: audio, computer, microform,
unmediated, and video
35
Carrier Type – MARC 338
CORE ELEMENT
RDA 3.3, terms listed in 3.3.1.3
“the format of the storage medium and housing of a carrier
in combination with the type of intermediation device
required to view, play, run, etc., the content of a resource”
Instead of recording all, may record the carrier type that
applies to the predominant part or most substantial parts of
the resource
Examples: audio disc, computer disc,
microfiche, volume, videodisc
Do not confuse with term used in Extent (MARC 300 $a):
some terms in common
36
Example: MARC 336-338 Fields
Book:
336 $a text $2 rdacontent
337 $a unmediated $2 rdamedia
338 $a volume $2 rdacarrier
37
Templates & macros
Voyager templates will have
336, 337 and 338 fields in them
for various formats
There will also be macros to add,
for example:
336 $a text $2 rdacontent
337 $a unmediated $2 rdamedia
338 $a volume $2 rdacarrier
38
Extent
CORE ELEMENT
…if resource complete or extent known (RDA 3.4)
“The number and type of units and/or subunits making up a
resource”
• Unit = a physical or logical constituent of a resource
(e.g., a volume)
• Subunit = a physical or logical subdivision of a unit (e.g.,
a page of a volume)
300 ## $a 2 volumes
300 ## $a 520 pages
39
Recording Extent
Give number of units and appropriate term:
• Sometimes a term from carrier type list (RDA 3.3.1.3)
• Or another term to designate the type of unit (RDA
3.4.1.5) if term not in list or prefer a term in common use
Cam Policy: Prefer to give a term in common use
300 ## $a 1 sheet
300 ## $a 1 CD-ROM
{or: 1 computer disc}
Several categories covered by exceptions (e.g., text, still
images, notated music, cartographic resources)
40
Changes from AACR2 related to Extent
Do not use abbreviations for terms (e.g., “pages,”
“volumes”, not “p.,” “v.”)
Use “approximately” (rather than “ca.”) and “that is” (rather
than “i.e.”)
Use “unnumbered”, rather than square brackets enclosing
the numeral
Be aware of changes in vocabulary from AACR2, e.g.:
“computer disc” is used for both “computer disk” and
“computer optical disc”
41
Changes from AACR2 related to Extent Example
AACR2
300 ## $a iii, 327 p., [31] leaves
RDA
300 ## $a iii, 327 pages, 31 unnumbered
leaves
42
Extent of Text – RDA 3.4.5
Single Volume with Numbered Pages, Leaves, or Columns (3.4.5.2)
Single Volume with Unnumbered Pages, Leaves, or Columns (3.4.5.3)
• RDA lists three options
• Cam generally follow LC-PCC PS 3.4.5.3 method c) 1 volume
(unpaged)
Complicated or Irregular Paging (3.4.5.8)
• RDA lists three options
• Cam use cataloguer judgment for most appropriate, but generally
follow LC-PCC PS 3.4.5.8 method c) 1 volume (various
pagings)
43
Extent of Text - Examples
300 ## $a 327 pages
300 ## $a xviii, 64 pages
300 ## $a 300 leaves
300 ## $a 246 pages, 32 leaves of plates
