– Urged Arabs to give up false gods and submit to one

The Hijra: A Turning Point
– When Muhammad fled
Mecca his journey was
called the hijra – Renamed the city of Yathrib
to Medina, or “city of
Prophet”
– AD 622 is the first year of
Muslim calendar
– Was welcomed by Muslim
converts as prophet and
ruler; they rallied their
armies around him
– They attacked Mecca and
destroyed the idols in the
Kaaba
– Died in 632

and compassionate
– People are responsible for their
actions, and face a final judgment
