Brief Introduction

The Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 drama film written and
directed by Frank Darabont. It is an adaptation of the Stephen
King novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. The
film stars Tim Robbins as Andrew "Andy" Dufresne and Morgan
Freeman as Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding.

The film portrays Andy, who spends nearly two decades in
Shawshank State Prison, a fictional penitentiary in Maine, and
his friendship with Red, a fellow inmate. Despite a lukewarm
box office reception that was barely enough to cover its budget,
the film received favorable reviews from critics, multiple award
nominations, and has since enjoyed a remarkable life on cable
television, VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray. This revival is reflected in
its high placement on various lists of great movies.
Characters




Andy Dufrasne played by Tim
Robbins.
A New England banker accused of
murdering his wife and her lover.
Claims he is innocent, but
everyone is innocent in Shawshank.
Likes to collect rocks, read, starts a
library, and dreams of building a
boat at the Pacific Ocean.
Close friends with Red and Brooks.
Characters

Ellis Boyd “Red” Redding
played by: Morgan Freeman.

Fellow inmate and prisoner
in Shawshank. Imprisoned
as a young man he has
almost been entirely
institutionalized. Very close
friends with Andy and
dreams of being free
someday.
Characters



Warden Norton played by: Bob
Guntan.
The warden is a very religious
man who on the side is hiding
money in false bank accounts
and using Andy so his crime
can’t be traced to him.
He enjoys using sadistic
means to torture his prisoners
such as throwing them in the
“hole”. He is very powerful and
exerts immense influence on
the prison.
Characters




Brooks Hatlen played by:
James Whitmore
The prison librarian, Brooks
has been in Shawshanks for
almost all of his life.
He is known for his caring
personality( takes care of a
baby crow Jake), but
eventually is released.
He gives into
institutionalization and
commits suicide because he
can’t live in the real world.
Characters




Tommy Williams played
by: Gil Bellows
A young man in and out
of prison his whole life,
Tommy came to
Shawshank for robbery.
Has a wife and child at
home, so he enlists
Andy’s help in learning
how to read and write so
he can get a high school
diploma.
Was in prison with the
man who killed Andy’s
wife and her lover.
Theme
Institutionalization is a major
theme in The Shawshank
Redemption. Many prisoners
have been in the prison for so
long that they have been
institutionalized, which means
the only life that they know is
the one within the prison walls.
Example: Brooks lived most of
his life in the prison, so when
released ,he does not know how
to live in the outside world.
Things have changed so much
while he was in prison and he
even thinks of crimes he could
commit in order to be thrown
back into prison. Eventually, he
commits suicide because he
cannot handle life in the real
world.
Theme



The integrity of Andy is also an important theme in
the story line, especially in prison, where integrity
is lacking.
The Shawshank Redemption is an allegory for
maintaining one's feeling of self-worth when placed
in a hopeless position.
Moreover, the film provides a great illustration of
how characters can be free, even in prison, or
unfree, even in freedom, based on one's outlook in
life.
“We sat and drank with the sun on our shoulders, and felt like
free men. We could'a been tarring the roof of one of our own houses.
We were the Lords of all Creation.”... “You could argue he'd done it to
curry favor with the guards. Or maybe make a few friends among us
cons. Me, I think he did it just to feel normal again...if only for a short
while.”
“I have no idea to this
day what them two Italian ladies were singin' about. Truth is, I don't
want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I like to think they
were singin' about something so beautiful it can't be expressed in
words, and makes your heart ache because of it.”...“I tell you, those
voices soared. Higher and farther than anybody in a gray place dares
to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little
cage and made these walls dissolve away... and for the briefest of
moments -- every last man at Shawshank felt free.”
“There are things in this world not carved out of gray stone. That
there's a small place inside of us they can never lock away, and that
place is called hope.”

Symbols

The Holy Bible: To
the warden, the Bible
的)and to be followed
at all times, so it is a
rule book.

To Andy he hides his
rock hammer in the
Bible going against the
rules completely.
Symbols

The music symbolizes
hope and especially Andy's
hope that he will someday be
free and living on his own
again. The music can be in
his heart and mind and the
warden cannot take that away
from him.

The harmonica is a
symbol of harmony and it
shows the harmonic
relationship between Andy
and Red because Andy gives
it to Red. It also symbolizes
hope.
Background Information

The Shawshank Redemption was the quietest film to be
nominated for seven academy awards. In the shadow of
1994's big winner Forrest Gump, it did not win a single
one.

In 1995, a year after it came out in the theaters,
Shawshank became the top video rental of the year.

The last scene on the beach was almost left out of the
movie, but it was too important that they be reunited for
the audience’s sake. It showed the love story between
two friends who transcend life and space in order to
remain close.

The Shawshank Redemption shows that with hope and
persistence, everyone can find their own place in the
world.

Movie Reviews

1900, an abandoned baby which is taken care
by one of the crews in the ship, Virginia. 1900 was
the year which the crew discovered the baby, thus,
the boy was named 1900. The crew dies several
years later and at that time, 1900 is entirely
isolated. He is a genius and he knows how to play
the piano without being taught. He gets his own
style and wins the applause of passengers.
However, he isn’t happy at all. What he is
searching for is love and care, yet he cannot find
them.


Changes make 1900 scared, he wants his everyday life
remains the same. For 27 years, he stays on board and
never treads on land. Although his crews always persuade
him to get off, he isn't willing to try. Several months after the
girl he loved had left, 1900 suddenly wants to tread on land.
His reason is that he wants to listen to the voice of the sea
as he can only hear it clearly on land. However, it’s true that
he wants to find the girl and expresses love to her. 1900
hides his feeling again. Yet, when he is on the halfway of the
ladder that leads to the land, he stops. He stands there to
look at the city in front of him. 1900 gives up treading on
land and returns to the ship.
Many years later, as the ship is too old and it needs to be
exploded to pieces,1900 insists to die with it.
Meanings
The reason why 1900 doesn‘t get off the ship?
1900 takes the piano as an example, “ There are finite keys on
the piano”, and he can make “infinite music” out of it. However,
the world is a piano that is too big for him. There are infinite
keys in the world, how can he make music out of it? It implies
that there are so many changes in the world; he can hardly
face the challenges. “There are thousands of streets in the
city…which one should I choose to die?” It shows that 1900 is
scared by the ever-changing world and he is too tired to
choose. He thinks that he can’t adapt to the changes as “ the
world has passed me (him) by”. In addition, fame, fortune, girl
can’t make him tread on land. 1900 chooses to die on the ship
rather than getting off. It can be seen that how deeply he is
afraid of changes. The marvelous life of 1900 makes him
become the legend.

PLOT


Bella is a unique girl, she does not like vanity and the pursuit of
fashion. She also does not want to disguise (伪装)herself to
good relations with other students.
Because his mother remarried, Bella moved to live with his
father .In the new school, Bella met a boy named Edward, he is
different, not only handsome, clever, humorous, and also he is a
vampire(吸血鬼).Edward and his family chose a unique way of
life, they do not drink human blood.Bella quickly fell into love with
him. Their love is like rare sunshine gives grace to the castle .
The movie tells a love story between a common girl called
Bella and a vampire named Edward .no matter what kind
of troubles they met, they always be together .
The movie is very beautiful, and the actors are well-chosen.
This is the American love story. It brings me different
feelings. Don't regard it as an unbelieveable love
experience, when you fall in love or you are in love, I think
you will find these amazing feelings, then it will be your
own story of “twilight”.
The Day after Tomorrow

The Day After Tomorrow is a 2004
apocalyptic science-fiction film that depicts
the catastrophic effects of both global
warming and global cooling. It was once part
of the top 50 grossing film of all time, with
total revenue of US $542,771,772. It is the
second highest grossing movie not to be #1
in the US box office (behind My Big Fat
Greek Wedding). The movie was filmed
mostly in Montreal, and is the highest
grossing Hollywood film in history to be filmed
in Canada.
synopsis

What if we are on the brink of a new Ice Age? This is the
question that haunts climatologic Jack Hall. Hall's research
indicates that global warming could trigger an abrupt and
catastrophic shift in the planet's climate. While Jack warns the
White House of the impending climate shift, his 17 year-old son
Sam finds himself trapped in New York City where he and
some friends have been competing in a high school academic
competition. He must now cope with the severe flooding and
plummeting temperatures in Manhattan. Having taken refuge
inside the Manhattan Public Library, Sam manages to reach his
father by phone. Jack only has time for one warning: stay
inside at all costs. As full-scale, massive evacuations to the
south begin, Jack heads north to New York City to save Sam.
But not even Jack is prepared for what is about to happen--to
him, to his son, and to his planet.
The main characters

The main characters in "The Day After Tomorrow" are
Dennis Quaid's Jack, a brilliant but abrasive paleoclimatologist -- his work predicted the catastrophe, but
no one would listen -- and Jack's brilliant but
underloved son, Sam, who is played by Jake
Gyllenhaal. The movie was made by the paleo-writerdirector Roland Emmerich; he collaborated on the
screenplay with Jeffrey Nachmanoff. While subtlety
has never been Mr. Emmerich's strong suit, he's a
showman with a gift for choosing big subjects to
please, or at least attract, big crowds ("Independence
Day" in 1996, "Godzilla" two years later).
Significance


This film is propaganda designed to shift the
policy of this nation on climate change. At
least that's what I take from producer Mark
Gordon's comment that "part of the reason
we made this movie" was to "raise
consciousness about the environment."
Fox spokesman Jeffrey Godsick says, "The
real power of the movie is to raise
consciousness on the issue of (global
warming)."

Politics and message in Harry Potter

Rowling: “I wanted Harry to leave our world and find exactly the
same problems in the wizarding world. So you have the intent to
impose a hierarchy, you have bigotry, and this notion of purity,
which is this great fallacy, but it crops up all over the world.

People like to think themselves superior and that if they can pride
themselves in nothing else they can pride themselves on
perceived purity.

You should question authority and you should not assume that the
establishment or the press tells you all of the truth."
