What is RefWorks • A web-based bibliographic citation manager • It allows you to collect, save and organize bibliographic citations to journal articles, books, web sites and other sources that you have found during your research • You can create correctly formatted bibliographies in your preferred style of output eg. Harvard • It is available free of charge to all Unisa students, staff and faculty • Is accessible both on and off campus • To use the software, you will need to create an account. Create a RefWorks account • • • • • Connect to RefWorks at http://www.refworks.com/refworks/ Click on Sign up for an Individual Account Complete all fields in the Registration form Click on Register Once your information has been submitted, you will have immediate access to RefWorks • You will receive a confirmation email with your username, password and group code. (Keep this email.) • If you already have an account, Login. • In case you have forgotten your login details, use the Forgot your log-in? link. Law resources with RefWorks filters The following resources have RefWorks filters: • Library catalogue • Sabinet databases • Ebsco-host databases • ProQuest databases • Informit databases • Emerald Sign up for a new account Fill in all the required information to register. Log in Collecting Citations Basic procedure to import citations into RefWorks is: • do a search on your topic using the Library Catalogue and/or the online databases, select the relevant citations and import them into RefWorks • There are various ways of importing information into RefWorks: – Most databases allow you to directly import the citations into RefWorks (Ebsco-host, Sabinet, ProQuest etc) – Library Catalogue requires that you create a text file of citations, then you will have to import that file into RefWorks using database filters. (Innovative Interfaces) – You may also manually add references to RefWorks (where references are not available electronically) – Import from websites (Google) – (a set up needed on Google Scholar under preferences) How to import references from the catalogue: Perform a search and mark relevant records by clicking Add to Bag. Click on View Bag. Login http://www.refworks.com/refworks/ Import Select the correct filters, right click on From text to open the text box and paste the text you copied from the Catalogue Importing references from Sabinet • Perform a search on Sabinet and select the relevant references by clicking on the green crosses which will turn to red x • The marked records will be saved in the My action list at the right bottom of the page Perform a search on Ebsco- Host Mark relevant articles Export Direct export to RefWorks Last imported folder Last imported references Google Scholar Google Scholar Bibliography manager Advanced Scholar Search Google advanced search Importing from Google View last imported folder References > Last imported Navigating RefWorks: Change view Editing references Write-N-Cite • Write-N-Cite allows you to run an abbreviated version of RefWorks in Microsoft Word • With Write-N-Cite, you can cite references in a manuscript with the click of a button. • The utility installs a RefWorks tab in the MS Word ribbon or you can access it from the References tab in Microsoft Word Installing Write-N-Cite • Write-N-Cite 4 for Windows is compatible with the following applications: – Microsoft Word 2007, 2010 and 2013 (local installations of 2013 only) – Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 and 8 Prerequisites for installing WNC • Various prerequisites are required for Write-N-Cite 4 to be able to install correctly. • These prerequisites are various software components that are required on your computer: – Please make sure you have updated your computer’s operating system and MS Office itself by visiting http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com Prerequisites for installing WNC cont – To download and install .NET 4 please visit Microsoft .NET Framework 4. – To download and install Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office Runtime please visit Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office Runtime. • Please make sure you have a current installation of Java on your computer by visiting the Java download site Installing Write-N-Cite • Log into your RefWorks account • Under the Tools drop-down menu, select Write-N-Cite • Copy the code above the Downloads. You will need it to log into Write-N-Cite • Click on Write-N-Cite 4 for 32 bit Word Write-N-Cite 4 for 32 bit Word Run WnC4Install32-4.2.1141.exe The Publisher could not be verified… Run Preparing to install… Welcome to the the InstallShield Wizard for Write-N-Cite… Next Ready to install Or you will be prompted to first download the following software on your computer Finish Inserting references using RefWorks • Open the research paper in Word • Click on RefWorks • You will be prompted to log in. Use the code you copied from RefWorks • Click on Sync my database • Position the cursor where you would like to insert the reference of the publication you are referring to Inserting references using RefWorks Inserting references using RefWorks • Select your reference style in the dropdown menu next to Style • Click on Insert Citation and then Insert New • A screen will appear with one line references that are in the RefWorks account. If you have folders the folders will appear Inserting references using RefWorks • Click on the reference you would like to insert • Write-N-Cite 4 automatically inserts the in text citation but without a page number. • To add page numbers to your in-text citation, click on Suffix on the Write-N-Cite screen Add page number • Type the specific page number in the Suffix block in the following format (colon, no space, page number (e.g. Abrahams, MacMillan 2009:77). (This may vary depending on the reference style you use) • Click on OK to save to Word. Generating the bibliography • Make sure you selected the desired output style • Click on Bibliography Options and then Insert Bibliography to generate the bibliography • The bibliography will be generated and inserted automatically Generating the bibliography
