What Makes the SciTech Program Unique?
• All components of the Grade 6, 7 and 8 curriculum expectations
are taught through an interdisciplinary approach where possible
• The use of technology is widely applied in all subject areas:
iMovie, Macromedia Flash, NXT Lego Mindstorms, Toon Boom
Animation, Videography, Comic Life, Tinker Plots
• Enhanced SciTech Opportunities: PEO (Bridge Building and Math
Competitions), Science Fair, Skills Canada (Lego Robotics,
Cardboard Boat, Video Production), FLL, Applewood Science
Challenge, Cawthra Animation Festival, Solar Car Challenge

The Application Process:
How does my child apply to the program?
• Only residents south of the 401 in Peel Region may apply
• Applications are online only, starting January 30th until
February 7th 2014
• Applications through the Tomken Website and follow the
link to take you directly to the application
• Submit completed application package, including $40.00
non-refundable fee, by February 7th online
• Cash to the school by February 7th, if necessary
Online Application, you will need:
• Your child’s student number (see report card)
• Your child’s OEN number (see report card)
• Debit or Credit card information
• Your child to complete a question: Why do
you want to be part of our program?

Completed Application Includes:
• Completed application form
• $40.00 non-refundable fee
• Report cards:
Grade 4, 3rd term Report Card;
Grade 5, Progress Report;
and Grade 5, 1st term Report Card
• Report Card information is online for Peel students
• IEP if applicable
• All communication from Tomken will be by email

• Workshop times will be randomly selected and emailed to you
• Thursday, February 13th – Inquiring Minds Workshop at preappointed times in Tomken South
• Random Selection Candidates will be emailed
• April 7th - Acceptance offers emailed

SCI-TECH FAQ'S
Are all subjects taught in SciTech?
Yes, we meet all the Ministry of Education expectations. We are a
full time program, 5 days per week from 8:23 a.m. until 2:20 p.m.
We integrate the expectations and enhance and extend science,
technology and mathematics.
What do the candidate's marks have to be?
Although we consider all applicants, with a large number of
interested students, successful applicants are usually "A and B+
students".

Can I stay in French Immersion and be in SciTech?
No, you must choose one regional program.
How does this program compare to the gifted program?
It doesn't compare. They have a different focus. We focus on Science
and Technology and our students study and work to very high
provincial standards.
What happens if my child has an IEP (Individual Education Plan)?
If your child has an IEP and has been deemed exceptional, we will
maintain this document as it is a Ministry mandate.

Where and when do we apply in the application?
Online applications open from January 30th to February 7th.
Is there a tour of the school?
Yes, if you are accepted into the program, we have a Tomken
Orientation/Information Night for all incoming Grade 6 students on
Thursday, May 22, 2014. There will be guided tours of our school.

What extra-curricular activities and clubs are offered at Tomken?
Athletics: An outstanding intramurals program before school, during
lunch and afterschool; School teams (volleyball, basketball, soccer, flag
football and ice hockey)
Arts and Community: Student Senate, Music Council, Arts Council,
Athletic Council, Library Club, Tomken Reads, Choirs, Musical, Chess
Club, Scrabble Club and many more.

Is transportation provided?
No. It is the parent's responsibility to provide transportation to the
school for 8:23 a.m. and to leave the school at 2:20 p.m.
Parents may independently arrange car pooling or private bussing at
an additional cost.

Will being in the Tomken SciTech program guarantee my child a
spot in a high school regional program (SciTech, IBT, IB, Arts)?
No. In grade 8, students will have the choice of applying for any of
the regional programs and proceed through the application process,
or to attend their home school.
Is there before and after school care provided?
No. There is no before and after school care provided for students. It
is the parents' responsibility to arrange for drop off and pick up at the
appropriate times if your child is not involved in a school activity.
There is no waiting area for students.
