A variable is a characteristic or attribute that can assume
different values.
Data are the values (measurements or observations) that
the variables can assume.
Variables with values that are determined by chance are
called random variables.
A collection of data values from a data set.
Each value in the data set is called a data value or a
datum.

is the one that is being manipulated by the researcher.
The independent variable is also called the
explanatory variable.
The resultant variable is called the dependent
variable or the outcome variable.
A confounding variable is one of that influences the
dependent or outcome variable but was not separated
from the independent variable.
