One company making a difference for patients everyday
Janssen is proud to feature artwork created by people affected
by the illnesses and diseases we are committed to treating and preventing.
Objectives:
1. Improving access to innovative medicines
in Atlantic Canada means improving
outcomes for patients
2. Medicines are a contributor to health
system sustainability, not a barrier
3. Harnessing the power of partnership and
collaboration to deliver better health
outcomes

A Flawed Premise:
• A silo approach focused to
containing drug costs
misses the mark
• Where the evidence exists
perhaps more should be
invested in medicines
where clear downstream
offsets in the health system
or society can be realized
• Medicines are ~ 8.5% of
publicly funded health care
costs

Vaccines:
• Evidence is clear on the benefits of
vaccinations to the health system
and society
• Reduced hospitalization, morbidity,
mortality
• It would be easy to “cost-contain”
vaccines but the impact would be
devastating

• The power of partnership – leveraging expanding pharmacist scope
of practice to enhance vaccine uptake
• This flu season, 8 of 10 provinces will have pharmacist scope of
practice for vaccines in place (+MB, +PEI, +NF)

An Opportunity for Atlantic Canada
• Medicines reviewed/recommended by
CDR and negotiated through PCPA
are, by definition added value to the
health care system
• Rapid and simultaneous access to
these innovations across all four
provinces
• Open the doors for public/private
partnerships focused on cost-effective
outcomes for patients
