Robust Design of a Gas Turbine Engine
Secondary Flow System
Vince Sidwell, Prof. Dave Darmofal
Motivation
–
Gas turbine engine performance and durability relies on the performance of the
secondary flow system.
–
The variability in the performance of the secondary flow system appears to be
linked to shortfalls in engine durability.
Two turbine blades from the same
engine. Note the difference in condition.
Research Objectives
–
Determine a method to peform robust design on gas turbine engine secondary
flow systems.
–
Determine the characteristics of a robust secondary flow system.

If the mean life is 10,000 hours, roughly 15%
of the blades will fail before 2800 hours!
