We have identified:
Garbage
Chemicals from runoff
Runoff - manure,
fertilizers
• Erosion - sedimentation
build-up
• Possibly acid rain

• Trees were cut on the
stream leading into the
pond
• We saw a lot of
sediment or dirt built
up in the pond
• Question: Do you
have sediment
problems in the
marine park?

• Acid rain has a pH of
5.6 and below
• Our pond ph was 6
• Our snow ph was 7
• We will keep
measuring it - it can
change
• Effects…
Manure/algae threat in Hong
Kong and in Quebec

Quebec ‘Pope Pond’ Note:
Manure/algae threat in Hong
Kong and in Quebec
The causes of ‘red tide’, or too much algae in Hong
Kong and too much algae in Quebec, are the same manure or animal droppings go in the water!
New laws for farmers in Quebec:
 Manure can not be spread within 300 ft or 100
metres of a drinking well.
Brooks rivers and other sources of water are fenced
off to protect the water from animal waste. Animals
aren’t allowed to go and drink from the streams.
The land is tested often for over use of fertilizer.
Garbage in Quebec/Rubbish in
Hong Kong: Same problem!

• Many sources, such as detergent,
shampoo, oil, industrial waste, paint
• Chemicals affect reproductive cycle
by altering it. Some fish and other
aquatic life are deformed at birth.
• Chemicals affect water quality
• Alixia’s question: If a pregnant
women drinks polluted water will her
baby be deformed at birth like
animals sometimes are?
Our ideas to lessen the amount of
chemicals going in our water.
Examples of our ideas: How small
ways can add up to large
savings. See posters on view for
more ideas
Population of Hong
Kong?(7,000,000) Population
of Bury(1000) or province of
Quebec (7,600,000)
If we asked everyone to use 10ml
less? Do the math……
Hong Kong: 70,000,000 ml saved
Quebec: 76,000,000 ml saved
